1. Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) said, “If a believer faces a calamity in this world and utters Laa ilaaha illallaah, Allah will forgive all of his sins except the greater sins for which the punishment of Hell is obligatory. Utter Laa ilaaha illallaah and glorify Allah whenever you are faced with a calamity in future. In this case Allah will forgive all the sins committed between two utterances (of the above phrase) except greater sins.”

Hadith.1584 - Ma'ruf ibn Kharrabudh reports from Abu Ja’far Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) who said: "Indeed, Allah (swt), Blessed and Exalted, has paired Zakat with prayer, as He said: 'Establish prayer and give Zakat' (Surah Al Baqarah 2:43). Therefore, whoever establishes prayer but does not give Zakat, it is as though he has not established prayer."

Hadith.1409 - It is narrated by Ma'ruf ibn Kharbudh from one of them, meaning Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) and Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as): "Recite in the Qunoot of Witr: 'There is no god but Allah (swt), the Forbearing, the Generous. There is no god but Allah (swt), the Most High, the Mighty. Glory be to Allah (swt), the Lord (azj) of the seven heavens and the seven earths, and whatever is within them and between them, and the Lord (azj) of the Great Throne. O’ Allah (swt), You are the Light of the heavens and the earth. You are Allah (swt), the Ornament of the heavens and the earth. You are Allah (swt), the Beauty of the heavens and the earth. You are Allah (swt), the Pillar of the heavens and the earth. You are Allah (swt), the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth. You are Allah (swt), the Helper of those who cry for help. You are Allah (swt), the Reliever of the distressed. You are Allah (swt), the One who answers the prayer of the distressed. You are Allah (swt), the God of the worlds. You are Allah (swt), the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. You are Allah (swt), the Remover of hardship. You are Allah (swt); with You every need is resolved. O’ Allah (swt), nothing repels Your anger except Your forbearance. Nothing delivers from Your punishment except Your mercy, and nothing can rescue me from You except pleading with You. So grant me, O’ my God, mercy from You that suffices me from the mercy of any other than You, by the power through which You revived all in the lands and by which You revive the dead among Your servants. Do not destroy me with anguish until You forgive me, have mercy on me, and make known to me the response to my supplication. Grant me well-being until the end of my life. Overlook my missteps, do not let my enemies gloat over me, and do not grant them control over me. O’ Allah (swt), if You elevate me, who can bring me down? If You bring me down, who can elevate me? If You destroy me, who can intervene between You and me or interfere in any matter of mine? I know that there is no injustice in Your rule and no haste in Your punishment. The one who rushes is he who fears loss, and only the weak resort to injustice. You are far above all of this, my God. So do not make me a target for affliction, nor a subject for Your wrath. Grant me respite, relieve me, forgive my faults, and do not follow one trial with another. You see my weakness and lack of resources. I seek refuge with You this night, so protect me. I seek Your protection from the Fire, so protect me. I ask You for Paradise, so do not deny it to me.' Then call upon Allah (swt) with whatever you wish and seek His forgiveness seventy times."

Imam Sadiq (a.s) said the following regarding the Almighty God's statement: “Will not disobey thee in any just matter” [The Holy Quran: Mumtahana 60:12] “This means that you should not go haywire at times of calamity. You should not tear your clothing, scratch your face, scream and holler, sit by a grave crying aloud, wear black clothes, or mess up your hair.”

I heard Abu Ubaidullah, the client of al-Abbas reporting to Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali, peace be upon him, saying: I heard Abu Saeed al-Khudari say: The last sermon addressed by the Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, was the one addressed to us during the illness in which he died. He came out leaning upon ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib peace be upon him, and his maid Maymoonah. He sat on the pulpit and said: "O people! I am leaving behind among you two weighty things." Then he remained silent. A man stood up and said: "O messenger of Allah! What are these two weighty things?" The Prophet was upset till his face turned red and then it subsided. He said: "I did not mention them except with an intention to inform you, but you were in a haste, so I could not. It is a medium whose one end is with Allah, and the other end is in your hands, with whom you will do such a such thing. Be it known; they are the Qur’an and the smaller weighty thing, my Ahlul Bayt." Then he said: "By Allah, I am saying this to you while I pin more hope on the unborn progeny of the infidels than upon most of you." And then he said: "By Allah, whoever loves them, Allah will bless them with a light on the Day of Judgement, till they arrive near me at the Pool. And whoever hates them, Allah will keep them away from Him on the Day of Judgement." Abu Ja’far said: "Surely, Abu Ubaidullah has brought to us that of which he is aware."

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘Whoever of the servants (of Allah) after suffering a misfortune, upon recalling any of his suffering and sorrow, acknowledges it and exercises patience, if it befalls him suddenly, Allah forgives his past sins. Whenever thereafter upon recalling any of his suffering sorrow acknowledges it (saying ‘to Allah we belong and to Him we return’), Allah forgives his sins that may have taken place in between (the two occasions of recalling).”’

“We are only like the stars in the heavens. Whenever one star disappears (from sight) another one comes in view until you will point out with your fingers and make a gesture with your necks. Allah will cause your star to disappear from your sight. The descendants of ‘Abd al-Muttalib will all look similar as such that one would not know which is whiCh When your star will reappear then you must give thanks to Allah.”

“We are like the stars of the sky. Whenever a star sets another shines until when you point with your fingers at a shining star and turn your eyebrows towards it, Allah takes your star away from you. Then the progeny of Abdul Muttalib become the same that no one is distinguished from the other. If your star reappears, then praise your God!”

“About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . that they must not disobey you in lawful matters’ (60:13) Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘lawful matters means not to tear one’s shirt, slap one’s face, crying, ‘woe is me’, must not remain behind near the grave, must not blacken clothes and must not spread hairs.’”

We were with the messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله when he was returning from his farewell pilgrimage. He went forth until he reached Juhfa where he ordered his companions to decamp. The call for prayer was made and he led his companions in a two-unit prayer. After that he turned his face to them and said: The Kind and All-Aware has informed me that I am to die and you too will one day die. It is as though I have been called and have responded. I am to be asked about that which I was sent with for you and also what I leave behind in your midst including the Book of Allah and His proof – and you too shall be asked – so what are you going to reply to your Lord? They said: we will say ‘you have conveyed, counselled and struggled, so may Allah reward you on our behalf the best of rewards’. Then he said to them: do you bear witness that there is no God but Allah and that I am the messenger of Allah? that the Paradise is a reality, the Fire is a reality and the resurrection after death is reality? They said: we bear witness to that, he said: O Allah witness what they say. Behold! I make you witnesses that I myself bear witness that Allah is my Mawla, and that I am the Mawla of every Muslim, and that I have a greater claim over the believers than their own selves, do you admit to that and bear witness to it about me? They said: yes, we witness that to be true about you. He said: Behold! To whomsoever I am a Mawla then Ali is also his Mawla, and he is this one, and he took Ali by the hand and raised it with his own hand until their armpits became visible, then he said: O Allah – be a guardian to whomever takes him to be a guardian, and be an enemy to whomever takes him to be an enemy, aid the one who aids him and abandon the one who abandons him. Behold! I will proceed you but you will catch up with me at the reservoir – my Lake-fount – tomorrow. It is a Lake-fount whose breadth is like the distance between Busra and San`a. In it are goblets made of silver like the number of stars in the sky. Behold! I will ask you tomorrow about what you did in regards that which I made Allah bear witness to – over you – in this day of yours when you reach my Lake-fount. And also about what you did with regards the ‘Two Weighty Things’ after me, so take care of how you will preserve my legacy in them when you meet me. They said: and what are these ‘Two Weighty Things’ O the messenger of Allah? he said: as for the greater weighty thing then it is the Book of Allah Mighty and Majestic, a rope extending from Allah and myself in your hands, one end of it is by the hand of Allah and the other end is in your hands, in it is the knowledge of what has passed and what is left until the Hour comes. As for the smaller weighty thing it is the ally of the Qur`an, and that is Ali b. Abi Talib and his descendants عليهم السلام – the two will not separate until they return to me at the Lake-fount. Ma`ruf b. Kharrabudh said: I relayed these words to Abi Ja`far عليه السلام so he said: Abu Tufayl has spoken the truth – may Allah have mercy on him – we have found this speech in the book of Ali and do recognize it.

Ali Bin Al-Husayn (asws) said: ‘From among the sustenance are those which Allah (azwj) has Measured out for the people from what their needs are to Him (azwj). The sea (atmosphere) is the one which Allah (azwj) Mighty and Majestic has Created to be between the sky and the earth’. He (asws) said: ‘And Allah (azwj) has Determined in these the flow of the sun and the moon, and the stars, and the planets, and has Determined all of that upon the orbit. Then for every orbit is an Angel with whom there are seventy thousand Angels. So they turn the circle of the orbit. So it is upon their turning that the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the planets turn along with them. So they descend in their station which Allah (azwj) Mighty and Majestic has Determined for them. Therein are their days and their nights. So when the sins of the servants become numerous and Allah (azwj) Blessed and High Intends to Reproach them with a Sign from His (azwj) Signs, He (azwj) Orders the Angel in charge of the orbit to remove the orbit upon which the sun and the moon, and the stars, and the planets flow upon. So that Angel orders the seventy thousand Angels (which are under him) to remove these from their flows’. He (asws) said: ‘So they remove it and the sun becomes in that sea (atmosphere) in which flows in the orbit’. He (asws) said: ‘So its light gets obliterated and its colour changes. So if Allah (azwj) Mighty and Majestic Intends to maximise the Sign, He (azwj) Obliterates the sun in the sea (atmosphere) upon what Allah (azwj) Loves that His (azwj) creatures should fear His (azwj) Signs’. He (asws) said: ‘And that is during the eclipse of the sun’. He (asws) said: ‘And that is similar to what He (azwj) Does with the moon’. He (asws) said: ‘So if Allah (azwj) Intends to End it or Return it back to normal, He (azwj) Orders the Angel in charge of the orbit that he should return the orbit back to its normality. So he returns the orbit and the sun goes back to its normality’. He (asws) said: ‘So he takes it out from the water (fluid) and it is brownish (dim)’. He (asws) said: ‘And the (matter of) the moon is similar to that’. He (the narrator) said, ‘Then Ali (asws) Bin Al-Husayn (asws) said: ‘But rather, no one is scared of these two nor is anyone intimidated by these two Signs except the one who was from our (asws) Shiites. So if (these Signs) have happened, so be scared to Allah (azwj) Mighty and Majestic, then return (Repent) to Him (azwj)’.

Abu Ja’far (asws) said that ‘Allah (azwj) has winds of Mercy as well as winds of Punishment. So if Allah (azwj) Desires that He (azwj) Turns the winds of Punishment into the winds of Mercy, He (azwj) Does it, but He (azwj) never Makes (winds of ) Mercy to be turned into the wind of Punishment’. He (asws) said: ‘And it is never the case that He (azwj) is Merciful to all people who obey Him (azwj) and that their obedience should become an affliction for them, except after theirs having turned from their obedience. He (asws) said: ‘That is how He (azwj) Acted with the people of Yunus (as). When they believed, Allah (azwj) Bestowed mercy upon them after having had Ordained for them the Punishment. He (azwj) had Decided, then Enclosed them with His (azwj) Mercy. So He (azwj) Made the Punishment that was pre-destined for them as a Mercy. He (azwj) Turned it away from them and it had already descended upon them and overwhelmed them, but they pleaded before Him (azwj)’. He (asws) said: ‘And as for the wind of the destruction (Al-Aqeem), so it is a wind of Punishment. Neither, does it inseminate anything from the wombs or anything from the seeds, and it is a wind which comes out from the underneath the seven earths, and not a (single) wind came out from it at all except upon the people of Aad when Allah (azwj) was Wrathful against them. So He (azwj) Commanded the Keepers to take from it a measure of the size of a ring’. He (asws) said: ‘It rebelled against the Keepers, so there came out from it a measure of the nostril of a bull being wrathful against the people of Aad’. He (asws) said: ‘So the Keepers grumbled to Allah (azwj) from that. They said, ‘Our Lord (azwj)! It has rebelled against our orders. We are afraid that it would destroy the ones who have not been disobedient to You (azwj) from Your (azwj) creatures who built Your (azwj) City’. He (asws) said: ‘So Allah (azwj) Sent Jibraeel towards it who faced it with both his wings and returned it back to its place and said to it: ‘Come out of the ones whom you have not been Commanded for’. He (asws) said: ‘So it came out from the ones against whom it had not been Commanded for, and destroyed the people of Aad and those who were present with them (their supporters)’.

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, has joined zakat with Salah (prayer), saying, “Maintain Salah (prayer) and pay zakat.” Thus, if one does not pay zakat, he has not performed Salah (prayer).”’

The Messenger of Allah (s) said: O Hudhayfa! Surely, the Proof of Allah over you after me is `Ali b. Abi Talib. Disbelieving him is disbelieving in Allah, associating partners with him is associating partners with Allah, doubting him is doubting Allah, denying him is denying Allah, and negating him is negating Allah; for he is the brother of the Messenger of Allah, his deputy, and the Imam of his Nation and their Master. He is the firm Rope of Allah and the Firm Handle with no crack in it. Regarding him, two will be destroyed, to no fault of his: an excess lover (muhib ghal) and one who falls short (muqassir). O Hudhayfa! Do not split away from `Ali, for you will have split away from me; and do not oppose `Ali, for you will have opposed me. Surely, `Ali is from me and I am from him. Whoever hurts him has hurt me, and whoever pleases him has pleased me.

Everything in this book that is narrated from Maruf ibn Kharrabudh has been transmitted by me from my father - may Allah (swt) be pleased with him - from Sad ibn Abdullah, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa, from Al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from Malik ibn Atiyyah Al-Ahmasi, from Maruf ibn Kharrabudh Al-Makki.

“Once Amir al-Mu’minin (Ali ibn abu Talib) (a.s.) prayed the morning prayer with people in Iraq. After prayer he gave a speech on having fear of Allah. He wept and made people weep. He then said, ‘By Allah, I lived with a people, in the times of my beloved one, the Messenger of Allah, who were ragged, dusty and slim-bellied. Between their eyes it looked like the hooves of a goat. They spent the night in prostration and in standing position before their Lord, only resting on their feet or forehead. They whispered to their Lord to set their necks free from the fire and, by Allah, I saw them in such condition and they still were afraid and anxious (because of the next life).”’

“Whenever we go to Abu Ja’far al-Baqir (as), he says: “Khurasan! Khurasan! Sajistan! Sajistan!” As if he wants to tell us good news (about deliverance).”

I heard the Messenger of Allah (s) say: I am the Master of the Prophets, and `Ali b. Abi Talib is the Master of the Deputies, and al-Hasan and al-Husayn are the Masters of the Youth of the People of Paradise, and the Imams after them are the Masters of the Godfearing. Our friends are the friends of Allah, and our enemies are the enemies of Allah. Obedience to us is obedience to Allah, and disobedience of us is disobedience of Allah.

1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from al- Rabi ‘ al-Musliy from Ma‘ruf ibn Kharrabudh from those who had seen ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), eating bread with grapes.”

the Prophet (S) had said: “The example of my family among this umma is like the stars of the sky. Whenever a star sets another shines until when you stretch your eyebrows towards (a shining star) and point with your fingers at it, the Angel of Death comes to take it with him. Then you remain a period of time unknowing which one it is and so the progeny of Abdul Muttalib become the same in this regard. While you are so, Allah will make your star shine again. Then you are to praise Allah and to accept your star.”
