الحسن بن علي

I asked Abu Al-Hasan (as) about a man who purchased a specified number of plots of land from another man for one hundred kurr, with the condition that he would give him the payment from the yield of the land. Imam (as) said: "This is forbidden." I said: "May I be your ransom, what if he purchases the land with a specified measure and with wheat from elsewhere?" Imam (as) said: "There is no harm in that."

I asked Abu Abdullah Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) about a man who bequeathed a portion of his wealth. Imam (as) replied: "A portion is one-tenth." Allah (swt), the Almighty, said: "Then place on every mountain a portion (juz') of them" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:260), and the mountains were ten.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Allah, the Most Blessed, the Most High, grants good rewards to a person of excellent moral behavior as He grants rewards to one who strives hard (does Jihad) in the way of Allah, mornings and evenings.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about circumcision of a child, if on the seventh day is of Sunnah or it can be delayed and which one is better. He (the Imam) said, ‘On the seventh day is of Sunnah but delaying is not harmful.’”

“Once, a man who sold flour came before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). He (the Imam) said to him, ‘Beware of cheating; one who cheats in matters of properties, cheating takes place in his properties, if he does not have any property cheating takes place in his family (wife).”’

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘Should a man after using the toilet first wash his buttocks or his urethra?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is buttocks, then urethra.’”

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘One who refuses to receive Zakat, when it is obligatory on him to receive is like one who refuses to pay Zakat when it is obligatory on him to pay.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, did not grant a favor to people with Tawaf al-Nisa’ a man would return to his family and his wife becomes unlawful for him.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘The daughter of Hamzah was proposed to the Messenger of Allah (saww) for marriage and he (the Messenger of Allah) said, “Did you not know that she is a daughter of my brother because of breastfeeding?'"

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a boy who is breastfed once and twice. He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not cause unlawfulness.’ I counted up to ten times breastfeeding. He (the Imam) said, ‘If they are on different times they do not cause unlawfulness.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, people who live in the mountains cut off the tails of their sheep because they become very large.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not lawful (inedible).’ I then asked, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, can it be used in lamps for lighting during the night? He (the Imam) said, ‘You must take notice that it can come in contact with your hand and clothes and it is unlawful.’”

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who is the person in charge of the assets of orphans; if he can borrow from such assets. He (the Imam) said, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), would borrow from the assets of orphans under his guardianship.’”

“We were in the presence of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when a man came and complained before him about a misfortune that he had suffered. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘If you exercise patience, you will be rewarded and if you do not exercise patience, Allah’s system of working of things will apply to you without change and you will be counted a sinner.’”

"Ja'da bint al-Ash‘ath ibn Qays al-Kindi poisoned al-Hassan ibn Ali (a.s.) and a female servant of the Imam (a.s.). The female servant, however, vomited the poison, but in the case of al-Hassan (a.s.) the poison remained in his digestive system and caused swelling that killed him.”

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), ’In Salah (prayer) with an Imam I complete the recitation before he does.’ He (the Imam) said, ’Leave one verse, speak of the glory of Allah and praise Him and when he (the Imam) completes, read that verse, then perform Ruku’ (bowing down on one’s knees).”’

“Once I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) about backbiting. The Imam said, ‘It is when you say about your brother in belief something about his religion that he has not done, and publicize against him something that Allah has covered up for him and he is not convicted for such crimes.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When a man dies leaving behind his father who is owned by someone or his mother who is owned by someone and the deceased is free, with his legacy, his father or relative is bought who then is made to inherit the remaining of the legacy.’”

“I once wrote to the man (a.s.), and asked about the case of a man who has a wife who is of ‘Ammah (the general population). He wants to divorce her but she hides her Hayd (menses) and Hayd (menses)-free period for fear of divorce. He (the Imam) (a.s.), wrote, ‘He can hold back from her for three months, then divorce her.”’

“I once heard Ja’far ibn Muhammad (a.s.), saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said, ‘O Ali, instruct your women not to perform Salat (prayer) without having dressed well and not to use a necklace which is made of skin.’”

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘Of the two issues whichever comes first, it marks the end of her waiting period: one is passing of three months in which she does not see Hayd (menses), thus her waiting period ends. If three Hayd-free periods pass this also marks the end of her waiting period.’”
