“I once heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘Squash, gourd increases power of reason.’”

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), said to me, ‘The assets of a lost person must be kept for four years; then they are distributed.’”

Abu Abdillah Ja’far ibn Muhammad, peace be upon him said: The Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, learnt that a group among the Quraish was saying: "Muhammad thinks that he has firmly connected this matter (of succession after him) with his Ahlul Bayt, but when he dies, we shall snatch it away from them and place it among others." The Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, came to them and addressed: "O people of Quraish, how is that you are prone to disobedience after I have gone? Do you wish to see me with a detachment of my companions hitting your faces and necks with the sword?" Then Jibraeel, peace be upon him, descended and said: "O Muhammad! Your Sustainer sends you peaceful greetings and commands: "Say, Allah willing, and ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib." The Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, said: "Allah willing, and ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, who will attend to that among you."

For one who recites Yasin once in his lifetime Allah writes for him virtues million times more than the number of Allah’s creatures that are in this world and would be in the heavens on the Day of Judgment, and the same number of his sins would be forgiven and that man would not be afflicted with poverty and sorrow: he would be safe from death by being buried under debris, misfortune, insanity and doubts and from every such illness that might give him pain, and Allah would make the pangs of death and its fear easy and light; and at the time of departure of the soul, Allah would be his Helper while for one whose helper is Allah there is generous livelihood in this world while in the next there would be happiness and pleasure before Allah and also a great reward. When he meets his Lord in the Hereafter, Allah would say to all the angels that exist in skies and the earth that I am happy and satisfied with such and such a man, so O angels, all of you seek forgiveness for this man.

My father Ja`far ibn Muhammad said: My father Muhammad ibn `Ali said: My father `Ali ibn al-Husayn said: My father al-Husayn ibn Ali (AS) said I heard my father `Ali ibn Abu Talib (AS) say: Actions have three states: obligations, merits, and sins. As for obligations, the form part of the command of Allah, the Mighty and High, His Pleasure, His destiny, His Decree, His Will and His Knowledge. As for merits, the do not form part of the command of Allah; rather, they form part of His Pleasure, His Destiny, His Divine Decree, His Will, and His Knowledge. As for sins, they do not form part of the command of Allah; rather, they form part of His Destiny, His Divine Decree, His Will, and His Knowledge. Hence, he will punish people because of them. The Compiler of this book says: With regards to sins, the predestination of Allah, the Mighty and High, resides in His Order regarding them. With regards to sins, His Will resides in His Prohibition of them. With regards to sins, His Divine Decree resides in His Knowledge of their measures and their extents.

The Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, once missed one of his companions for a time and then, when he saw him again, he asked: "What has kept you from us so long?’ He said: "O Prophet of Allah, illness and poverty prevented me." The Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, said: "May I not teach you prayers which you would recite so that Allah may keep illness and poverty away from you?" He said: "Yes, may my parents be your ransom, O messenger of Allah." The Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, said: Say: "There is no might nor power except that by Allah. I entrust all my affairs unto the One Who lives for ever and never dies; All Praise be to Allah, Who begets no son, and Who has taken no partners in His Dominion, nor has He any protector. So magnify Him in the most Glorious way."

I entered in to see Abi al-Hasan Musa عليه السلام and said to him: May I be made your ransom, your father used to act kindly towards me and treat me with compassion, if you deem it proper to hold me in the same regard then you could do so. He [the Imam] said to me: O Yunus, I once entered in to see my father and there was in front of him a sweet dish [made of dates, butter and barley]. He said to me ‘Come near O son and eat from this, this was sent to us by Yunus, he is one of our oldest followers’. Therefore we will protect you.Abu al-Nadhr said: I heard Ali b. al-Hasan saying: Yunus b. Ya’qub died in Madina so Abu al-Hasan عليه السلام sent the Hunut [camphor], shroud and all that which would be required [for the dead body]. He also ordered his Mawali and the Mawali of his father and grandfather to accompany his body [in the procession] and said to them ‘this is a Mawla of Abi Abillah who used to reside in Iraq’. He told them ‘dig his grave in al-Baqi, if one of the people of Madina were to say to you that he is an Iraqi and we will not allow him to be buried in al-Baqi then say to them - this is a Mawla of Abi Abdillah who used to reside in Iraq, if you prevent us burying him in al-Baqi then we will prevent you from burying your Mawali in al-Baqi’. Abu al-Hasan Ali b. Musa عليه السلام sent an instruction to his [Yunus’s] associate Muhammad b. al-Habbab who was a man from the people of Kufa ‘lead his funeral prayer’.Ali b. al-Hasan from Muhammad b. al-Walid who said: The caretaker of the graveyard [al-Baqi] saw me near the grave after this. He said to me: Who is the man buried in this grave? For Abu al-Hasan Ali b. Musa عليه السلام exhorted me about him and ordered me to sprinkle water on his grave every day for a period of fourty months or days [Abu al-Hasan Ibn Fadhal said: this doubt originates from me]. He [Muhammad b. al-Walid] said: The caretaker of the graveyard also said: I have in my possession the bier that was used to carry the body of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم. Whenever a man from the Bani Hashim dies the bier cries out [makes a sound] and I would say [to myself] ‘which one of them has died?’ coming to know the next day. The bier cried out on the night that this man died, I said [to myself] ‘I do not know of any one of them [the Bani Hashim] being sick - so who could have died?’ when it was the morrow they came and took from me the bier and said to me: [It is] a Mawla of Abi Abdillah عليه السلام who used to live in Iraq [who has died].

Al-Sadiq Abu `Abdillah Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) said: When al-Husayn b. `Ali (as) was struck with the sword, and they prepared to sever his head, a caller called from the direction of the Lord of Glory from the depth of the Throne, saying: “O Nation that has become perplexed and misguided after its Prophet! Allah will not allow you to find success in Adha nor in Fitr.” He said: Then, Abu `Abdillah (as) said: By Allah, they will never find support nor success until the Revolutionary of al-Husayn (as) rises.

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. Ghalib b. Harb al-Dabi al-Tamtami and Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Uthman b. Abi Shayba narrated to us. They said: Yahya b. Salim and the cousin of al-Hasan b. Salih – and the latter was preferred – narrated to us. He said: Mus`ar narrated to us from `Atiyya form Jabir. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: On the gate of Paradise, it was written “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, `Ali is the brother of the Messenger of Allah” two thousand years before Allah created the heavens and the Earth.

I heard Abu Abdillah, peace be upon him, say: When this verse was sent down unto the Prophet, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Family: «The one who brings a good deed, will have better than it» (27:89) the Messenger of Allah, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Family, said: O Allah, increase me. Allah, Exalted and Glorious is He, then sent down unto him: «Who is it who will loan to Allah a good loan, so that He may multiply it to him many times over?» (2:245) The Messenger of Allah, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Family, then knew that abundance from Allah, Exalted and Glorious is He, cannot be counted and has no end.

Abu Abdillah Ja’far ibn Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: "When any of you prays to Allah with a firm intention to have his prayer answered, then he should (first) despair from all the people, and he should have no hope attached to anyone except Allah, Most High. When Allah finds that in his heart, then there is no prayer from him except that He grants. And take account of yourselves before your account is taken (on the Day of Reckoning), for on the Day of Resurrection there will be fifty stations, each equal to a thousand years of your reckoning." Then he recited this verse (from Qur’an): ’... in a period of day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years.’ (70:4)."

I was in Baghdad with Hisham ibn al-Hikam and Ali ibn al-Yaqteen. Ali ibn al-Yaqteen said, ‘I was (sitting) in the presence of the virtuous servant Musa ibn Ja’far (s). Then his son Al-Ridha (s) entered. Then he said, ‘O Ali! This is the master of my children. I have given him my nickname .’ Then Hisham hit himself on the forehead and said, ‘Woe! What did you say?’ Then Ali ibn Yaqteen said, ‘I swear by God that I heard him say (what I just told you).’ Then Hisham said, ‘By God, he has informed you that the affairs are entrusted to him (Imam al-Ridha) (after Imam Musa Al-Kadhim).’”

The following five things are considered to be a bad omen if they appear along the path of a traveler: crows making sounds from his right side; a wolf sitting on its tail and howling in his face, while first raising and then lowering its voice for three times; a deer coming from the right side and going to the north; a screaming owl; the private parts of a grey-haired woman; a female donkey whose tail has been chopped off. Anyone who runs into one of these and gets worried should say, ‘O my Lord! I seek refuge in You from the evils which I find within me. So please protect me from them.’”

“I once said to abu Ja‘far (a.s.), ‘A Hadith has reached me from al-Hassan al-Basriy. If it is a true Hadith then, ‘We are for Allah and to Him we return.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What does it say?’ ‘I am told that al-Hassan al-Basriy would say that even if his brain comes to a boiling point due to the hot sun, he will not seek shelter of the shadow of a wall that belongs to a money changer. Even if his liver cracks down because of thirst he will not use the water that comes from the house of a money changer.’ This is my business and profession. With this business my flesh and blood have grown. With this business I have performed Hajj and ‘Umrah.’ He (the Imam) sat straight and said, ‘Al-Hassan has spoken a lie. Take with fairness and give with fairness. When it is time for Salat (prayer), stop doing business and rise for Salat (prayer). Did you know that people of the cave were Say ar if ah (money exchangers)?”’

Whoever forwards Chapter 112 between himself and a tyrant, Allah, the Most Majestic, will prevent the tyrant from harming him. He reads it to all directions: his front, back, right and left. When he does so, Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, provides him good dealings from the tyrant and protects him against his evil.’ The Imam said, ‘When you fear something read one hundred verses from the Holy Quran as you like and then say three times, “O Lord, remove the misfortune from me.’”

‘Musa Bin Isa was in his house which was in the place of Sa’ee (nearby the Kaaba), overlooking it when he saw Abu Al-Hassan Musa (asws) coming from Al-Marwa upon his (asws) mule. So he ordered Ibn Hayyaaj, a man from Hamdaan who was very close to him (asws) to go and hold on to the reins and make a claim for the mule. So he came up to him (asws), held on to the reins, and staked a claim for the mule. Abu Al-Hassan (asws) took his (asws) feet off and dismounted from it and said to his (asws) servant: ‘Take the saddle and hand (the mule) over to him’. He said, ‘And the saddle is mine as well’. So Abu Al-Hassan (asws) said: ‘You are lying, for we (asws) have clear proof that it is the saddle of Muhammad (asws) Bin Ali (asws), and as for the mule, so we (asws) have bought it not so long ago and you know it, and what you are saying’.

“People are in four groups: ignorant people who get ruined by obeying their whims; haughty worshippers who get haughtier as they worship more; scholars who want to have more followers and be admired; and knowledgeable ones on the right path who wish to follow that path but cannot. The last group are the best people in your era and they have the most wisdom.”

The Messenger of Allah (SA) said: Marry virgins! Verily, they are the purest in speech, the best in morals, and the most fertile. Have you not come to know that on the Day of Judgment, I would be proud of you over other nations, eve for a miscarriage? The child who died during the birth will reach the Gate of Paradise covered in camphor. Allah, the Mighty and High, will say to it: “Enter Paradise!” It will reply: “No, not until my parents have entered.” Allah, the Mighty and High, will say to an angel: “Bring Me his parents.” The child will then be sent to Paradise in the company of his parents. Thus, Allah will say: “This is due to My Mercy upon you.”

“If the Almighty Allah grants a person piety and abstinence I hope for Paradise for him. I love it very much that a believer pays attention towards Allah in his obligatory prayers and does not worry about the world. If a believer pays attention towards Allah He too turns towards him and develop His love in the hearts of believers and will Himself love that believer.”

Abū Ibrāhīm (Imam Kāżim (a.s.)) said: When one leaves his house to go to the Ziyārah of Abī ‘Abdillāh, Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.), Allāh will dedicate an angel to him who will place his finger on the back of the Zā`ir and who will start writing (on his back) every word which comes out of his mouth until he arrives at the Ḥā`ir. After he exits from the doors of the Ḥā`ir, the angel will place his palm on the middle of the back of the Zā`ir and say, “Surely all of your past sins have been forgiven. Therefore, continue with good deeds.” The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chain: My father, from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Muḥammad ibn Khālid Al-Barqi, from Qāsim ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ḥasan ibn Rāshid, from his grandfather Ḥasan ibn Rāshid, from Ibrāhīm ibn Abil Bilād, from Abī Ibrāhīm (a.s.).
