Ali ibn Musa ibn Ja’far Al-Ridha (MGB) regarding what is said about the Al-Aftas clan. The Imam (MGB) said, “The Honorable the Exalted God brought about twelve clans from the Children of Israel - that is Jacob the son of Isaac the son of Abraham (MGB). God established Prophethood and the Book amongst them. God also generated twelve clans from the progeny of Al-Hassan (MGB) and Al-Hussein (MGB) - the sons of the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (MGB) and the Blessed Fatimah (MGB) who was the daughter of God’s Prophet (MGB).” Then the Imam (MGB) added by naming the twelve clans from the Children of Israel as follows, “Reuben - the son of Jacob; Simeon - the son of Jacob; Judah - the son of Jacob; Isaac - the son of Jacob; Zebulun - the son of Jacob; Joseph - the son of Jacob; Benjamin - the son of Jacob; Naphtali - the son of Jacob; Dan - the son of Jacob.”He (MGB) added, “And six clans were brought about from the progeny of Al-Hassan (MGB). They are the clan of Al-Hassan ibn Zayd ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali; the clan of Abdullah ibn al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali; the clan of Ibrahim ibn al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali; the clan of Al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali; the clan of Davood ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali; and the clan of Ja’far ibn al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali. All the progeny of Al-Hassan ibn Ali (MGB) come from them. Then he (MGB) counted the clans brought about from Al-Hussein ibn Ali (MGB) as follows: the clan of Muhammad ibn Ali al-Baqir ibn Ali ibn al-Hussein; the clan of Abdullah ibn al-Bahir ibn Ali; the clan of Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Hussein; the clan of Al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn al-Hussein ibn Ali; the clan of Umar ibn Ali ibn al-Hussein ibn Ali; and the clan of Ali ibn Ali ibn al-Hussein ibn Ali. These are the six clans which the Honorable the Exalted God brought about from Al-Hussein ibn Ali (MGB).”

Whenever a revelation would come down to the Prophet (s) during the day, he would not sleep until he informed `Ali of it. When it would come down to him during the night, he would not awake [for the morning] until he informed `Ali of it.

Inclination towards this world would increase anxiety and grief. Abstinence from this world would comfort the heart and the body.”

I repent to God for the following three actions:1- Abu Bakr and I took the rule over the people from others;2- I forced the Caliph on the people;3- I ranked some people over others.’”

“A worshipper prayed to Allah for eighty years. Then he fell in love with a woman and fulfilled his desires with her. When the angel of death approached him, he became mute. A beggar happened to pass by. That person pointed out the beggar to take the piece of bread lying in his pocket. The Almighty Allah had destroyed his worship of eighty years due to the adultery committed by him but He forgave him for offering that piece of bread.”

The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Whoever blesses Muhammad and his family, Allah says: “Allah blesses you”; so, he should increase in [saying] that. Whoever says: “may Allah bless Muhammad” and does not bless his family will not find the fragrance of Paradise; and its fragrance could be found at the travel distance of five hundred years away.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that one day the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, sat on the pulpit. He praised Allah, spoke of His glory, prayed for His prophets, and then said the following: ‘O people, those of you present must inform those who are absent. Whoever extends the due date for repayment in favor of a borrower who has difficulty to pay back, for such a person with Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, for every day a reward of charity equal to the amount of loan is recorded, until the loan is repaid.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘If a borrower has difficulty repaying the loan, he should be given time until his difficulty is no more, but it is better for you if you count it as is charity if he has difficulty to pay. You should provide him charity from your property; it is better for you.’”

“O' God! He tells me of Hassan who is oppressing me. But I forgive him. You too forgive him.” He kept on praying until he noticed his companion. He said: “May God bless you, too. Please go.” The man left. Later Hassan went to visit the Imam (a.s).

Combing attracts the daily sustenance; it improves the hair; it fulfills the needs; it increases the amount of semen; and it reduces the phlegm.’ He continued, ‘God’s Prophet (MGB) combed his beard forty times upwards and seven times downwards and said, ‘This will improve the mind and stop the phlegm.’”

When the Honorable the Exalted God created Paradise, He created it from the Light of the Throne. Then God took some of that Light and spread it. I received one-third of that Light. One-third of it reached Fatimah (MGB). One-third reached Ali (MGB) and the members of his household (MGB). Whoever is touched by this Light shall fall in love with the Household of Muhammad. Whoever is untouched by this Light is in darkness being outside the friendship of the Household of Muhammad.”

Messenger of God (ṣ) said, "God - Blessed and Exalted - has caused Islam to appear by my hands; He has revealed the Criterion to me; He has conquered the Kaʿbah by my hands; He honoured me above all his creatures; He made me the leader of the sons of Adam in this world, and the beauty of Resurrection in the next world. He has forbidden any Prophet from entering the Garden until I enter it, just as He has forbidden their nations from entering it. He made the succession in my Family after me until the trumpet is blown. Whoever has disbelieved in what I say has disbelieved in God Almighty."

I said to Imam Musa Kadhim (a.s): Please permit me to ask you a question. Imam (a.s) said: Ask about Imamate. I asked: Who is your successor; because I don’t know any other Imam? Imam (a.s) replied: Ali, my son, whom I have given my agnomen (of Abul Hasan). I asked: My master, save me from Hell-fire and purify me, since Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) said that you are the Qaim on the matter of Imamate. Imam (a.s) replied: But I am not the Qaim in this matter. Then he said: O Hasan, every Imam who is the leader of the Ummah and the appointed one on the matter of Mastership (Wilayat) is his Qaim. And when he passes away, the one who is after him is the one raised up by the command of Allah and the Divine Proof (Hujjat) till the time the Qaim and Hujjat is concealed from the people. Hence, all of us are Qaim. Thus, just as you behave with us [and accept our Mastership (Wilayat)] same was done with my son, Ali. By Allah, I have not acted thus on my own [appointing the Imam after me] on the contrary, the Almighty Allah has done it according to His will.

We estimated that at that time from the descendents of abu Talib, Hashim and Quraysh there were about fifty men besides his slaves and other people. At such time he look at al-Hassan ibn Ali coming and the front of his shirt was torn. He stood at the right of his father and we did not know him. Abu al-Hassan (a.s.) looked at him after a while and said, “My son, renew your thanks to Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most gracious, because He has granted you a new task (Leadership with Divine Authority).” The young man wept, praised Allah, and said, “We are for Allah and to Him we shall return. He then said, “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I pray to Allah for completion the blessings for us in you. “We are for Allah and to Him we shall return.” We asked about him and it was said that he was al-Hassan, the son of the Imam. We estimated his age at that time around twenty years or more. On that day we learned and came to know that he had tacitly made a statement about the succeeding Imam and (the Leader with Divine Authority).”

I met al-Hasan b. al-Hasan – he said: do we not have a right? do we not have a sanctity? if you were to select from among us [the Ahlulbayt as a whole] a single man he would have been sufficient for you [as an Imam]! I (Sulayman) did not have an answer for him, so I met Aba Abdillah عليه السلام and informed him of his words to me, he [the Imam] said to me: meet him and say to him – we came to you and said: do you have what the rest of the people do not have [do you have anything exclusive over the rest]? so you said: no, we considered you truthful [in your answer] and you became deserving of that [i.e. of nothing], then we came to the sons of your uncle [the descendants of al-Husayn] and said: do you have what the rest of the people do not have? so they said: yes, we considered them truthful and they became deserving of that [the Imama], he (Sulayman) said: so I met him and said to him what he (al-Sadiq) had said to me [to say to him], al-Hasan said to me: but we do have what the people do not have, I did not have anything [to reply to him], so I came to Abi Abdillah عليه السلام and reported to him [what had happened] – he said: meet him and say: Allah – the Mighty and Majestic – says in his book: “provide me with a book (scripture) before this one – or traces of knowledge – if you be truthful” (46:4), so sit down for us [become accessible to us] so that we can ask you [all the questions we have], he (Sulayman) said: I met him and argued against him using that – so he said to me: do you not have anything [to do] other than to humiliate us?!, if so and so [meaning Ja`far] chose to be free [unoccupied by Jihad – and devoted to scholarship] while we are engaged [in revolt – and therefore inept at scholarship] – then that is what takes away our right!

“The rights of a scholar include the following: You should not ask him too many questions. You should not rush to answer questions before he does. You should not insist when he doesn’t want to respond. You should not be pushy with him (pull on his clothes) when he gets tired. You should not point at him with your fingers. You should not wink at him. You should not whisper in someone’s ears in his class. You should not seek his faults. You should not talk too much or argue with him saying that others have said things opposite to his views. You should not divulge his secrets. You should not gossip about anyone in front of him. You should support him both in his presence and in his absence. When you go to see him with some people present there, you should greet all of them and express especial greetings for him. You should sit in front of him. You should rush to supersede others in fulfilling his needs whenever he needs something. Do not get upset if you have to wait a while to talk with him, since his case is similar to the case of a palm tree. That is, you have to wait for a while before you can get some dates. A scholar is just like one who fasts, stays up at night and strives in the way of God. Once a scholar dies it causes a gap in Islam which can never be filled up until the Resurrection Day. In fact, there are seventy-thousand special heavenly angels appointed to follow those who seek knowledge.

Go to him and deliver my greetings to him. Tell him that his family members have gathered together and wish you to be with them. Ask him to come here, if he pleases.” The narrator said, “I went to see the Imam (a.s.) in Al-Hamra and delivered the message to him. The Imam (a.s.) said, ‘Deliver my greetings. I will go there after twenty days.’ I returned and delivered the Imam’s response. Several days passed. On the eighteenth day Al-Joloodi’s agent called Warqa’ attacked and defeated us. I fled to As-Sowrayn and suddenly heard someone say, “O Athram!” I turned to him and saw Abul Hassan Ar-Ridha’ (a.s.). Abul Hassan Ar-Ridha’ (a.s.) asked me, “Has twenty days passed or not?”Muhammad ibn Soleiman al-Alawi referred to above is Muhammad ibn Soleiman ibn Dawood ibn Al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.).

‘Ali ibn Hafs ibn Umar wrote to Abu Ja’far al-Mansoor that I saw it written in a khan at Multan that: Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abdillah ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali Abi Talib (peace be upon him) says: When I reached this place, and found myself secure, I said: "Perchance, the drinking fountain may clear up to quench the thirst, a thirst which has been prolonged because of the turbid water, Perchance, you may be garbed by the unclothed one, and may find help from the lowly and oppressed; Perchance a bonesetter of the broken bone may from his kindness, feel sympathy for the broken bone and set it. Perchance, Allah may not allow His slave to despair, for all that is lofty and great is indeed negligible in His sight." Sheikh said: And Abu al-Tayyib al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Tammar recited to me quoting Abu Bakr al-Arzami, the following:- "(In this world) I find a (feeble) helpless person known as tough because of his tyranny, (but) had he adopted fear of Allah, his brutality might have been blunted; And (I find) a chaste person taken as helpless, because of his (virtue of) chastity (and modesty) (though) had it not been for fear of Allah, the ways (of evil) would not have found him powerless; And (I find) a fool whose affairs are cared for (by others), being appointed a leader by his fellowmen and his relatives, (in spite of the fact that) he has no resoluteness in his affairs, nor are nobility and magnanimity counted among his qualities. But all that is controlled by Allah, and He grants, So neither this contends him nor that tries to overcome him; (The truth is that) when Allah in His mercy, perfects the wisdom of a person, his behaviour and all his desires are perfected also."

“He will act as the Prophet (S) has acted. He will annul all what has been established before him as the Prophet (S) has annulled all that has been established in the pre-Islamic age. He will resume Islam anew.”

I asked him, “What then is the reason for it?” He said, “Abu Ja‘far, abu Dawaniq once said to abu Muhammad ibn al-‘Ash‘ath, ‘O Muhammad, I want a person of reason who has said the following. can represent me.” My father said, “I have found one for you. He is so and so ibn Muhajir, my maternal uncle.” He said, “bring him to me.” He has said that he brought him to abu Dawaniq. Abu Ja‘far, abu Dawaniq said, “O son of Muhajir, take this property to Madina and gave it to ‘Abdallah ibn al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan and a number of the people of his family among who is Ja‘far ibn Muhammad and say to them, “I am from Khrasan and an stranger in this area. One of your Shi‘a (followers) from Khurasan gave me this property to deliver to you. Then gave to each of them from the property with such and such conditions. When they take the property than ask them for a receipt our people has narrated who for the amount and kind of the property you have received.” He then took the property and went to Madina and came back to abu Dawaniq when Muhammad ibn al-’Ash‘th was also present. Abu Daqwaniq asked, “What did you leave behind?” He said, “I met the people and this is the receipt in their hand writings for what they received accept Ja‘far ibn Muhammad. I went to see him when he was praying in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah. I sat behind him t wait until he would finish and then I would give him the message as I had done with the others. He hurried up and finished and then turned to me and said, “O you, have fear of Allah and do not deceive Ahl al-Bayt (family members) of Muhammad (s.a). They have just experienced the government of the sons of Marwan and they all are needy.” I then asked, “What are you talking about, may Allah grand you well beeing?” He said, “Then he brought his head closer to me and told me about all that had passed between me and you as if he has the third person with us.” He has said that abu Ja‘far, al-Dawaniq said, “O ibn Muhajir take notice and pay attention that there has never been the family of a prophet without a Muhaddath (a person to whom angels would speak) among them. Today the Muhaddath among us is Ja‘far ibn Muhammad.” This was the reason for our receiving guidance and acceptance of this matter and faith.”
