"Breaking your fast at your brother's home is better than fasting seventy or even ninety times."

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Without fast ’I‘tikaf is not valid.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once initiated speaking without my asking anything, ‘’Ttikaf consists of three days, meaning, according to the Sunnah, by the will of Allah.’”

“The reward of doing Iftar at the house of a brother in faith is seventy or ninety times the reward of a fast.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who out of forgetfulness eats and drinks in the month of Ramadan, has said, ‘He completes his fast, it is only something Allah fed him.’”

Hadith.1808 - It is narrated: "On the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah, Ibrahim, the Friend of the Most Merciful (as), was born. Whoever fasts on that day, it will be an expiation for sixty years. On the ninth of Dhu al-Hijjah, the repentance of Dawud (as) was accepted. Whoever fasts on that day, it will be an expiation for ninety years."

“I heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘Your discontinuing your fast in the house of your brother in Islam is better than your fasting seventy or ninety times over.’”

"I was in Medina during the Month of Ramadan, and I said to Abu Abdullah (as): 'I wish to perform i'tikaf. What should I say, and what should I make obligatory upon myself?' Imam (as) said: 'Do not leave the mosque except for an unavoidable necessity, and do not sit under any shade until you return to your place in the mosque.'"

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), prohibiting the use of Narcissus. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, why is that? He (the Imam) said, ’Because it is the perfume of non- Arabs.’ Certain persons of our people have narrated that non- Arabs wear this perfume when fasting and say that it suppresses hunger.’”

narrated to him Ya’qub who has said the following: “I once heard a man asking abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the night of destiny, saying, ‘Please tell me about the night of destiny. Was it only just for one night, or it comes every year?’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), replied, ‘Had the night of destiny been removed, most certainly, the Holy Quran would also had been removed.’”

"The Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) performed i'tikaf in the first ten days of Month of Ramadan, then in the second ten days (the middle ten), and then in the last ten days. After that, the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) consistently performed i'tikaf in the last ten days of Month of Ramadan."

“I was in al-Madinah in the month of Ramadan and I said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that I wanted to remain in ’ Ttikaf. What should I say and what should I place upon myself?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You must not leave the Masjid except for something without which you cannot do; and you must not sit in the shadow until you return to your place.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (sw) performed I'tikaf in the first ten days of the month of Ramadan. In the second year it was in the second ten days and then in the third year in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. Thereafter it was all the time in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who has an amount which is only sufficient for him if he can give it to an outsider destitute or himself and (his) family use it. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can give to one of his dependents who then gives to another and so on, one person gives to other one and it will be one al-Fitrah for all of them.’”

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Without passing the twentieth day of the month of Ramadan Ttikaf is not valid.’ He (the Imam) then said that Ali ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would say, “I do not see Ttikaf, unless it is in Masjid al-Haram, Masjid of the Messenger of Allah, or a Jami‘ Masjid (central). It is not proper for one performing ’Ttikaf to go out of Masjid except for one’s urgent needs without which one cannot do, but then one must not sit down until one returns. The same rule applies to women.’””

4. The narrator says that he heard Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) say, “One who fasts on first of Shaban then surely, Paradise would be made obligatory for him. If he observes two fasts, the Almighty Allah would look at him with mercy in this world every day and night. He would also shower His mercy on him in Paradise. One who fasts for three days would get to visit Allah daily on the Divine throne in Paradise.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, continued fasting for such a long time that people thought he would not discontinue it. He then discontinued fasting for such a long time that people thought he would not fast. Then he began fasting as Dawud (a.s.), did. One day he would fast and then not fast the next day. He left this practice and would fast three bright days (13, 14 and 15) of every month. He then left this practice and divided them by one day in each ten days of the month, of which two were Thursdays with a Wednesday between the two Thursdays. He passed away with this practice.”

When the Prophet (MGB) had been appointed to Prophethood he (MGB) fasted day after day so much that they thought he will no longer break his fast. He (MGB) sometimes did not fast for so many days that they thought he (MGB) will no longer fast. Then he (MGB) started to fast one day and not fast the other days like the fasting of David (MGB). He (MGB) later stopped this and fasted on two Thursdays and a Wednesday in between them each month.”

"I heard Abu Abdullah (Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as)) say: 'Indeed, Allah (swt) did not make the fasting of the Month of Ramadan obligatory upon any nation before us.' I said to him: 'Then what about the words of Allah (swt), the Almighty: "O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you"?' Imam (as) said: 'Allah (swt) made the fasting of the Month of Ramadan obligatory only upon the Prophets, not their nations. He favored this nation and made its fasting obligatory upon the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and upon his nation.'"

I said to al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as): Inform me about the saying of Allah, “The month of Ramadan, in which the Quran was revealed” (2:185) – how is it that the Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan when the Quran was revealed over a period of twenty years from beginning to end? So, he said: The Quran came down altogether in the month of Ramadan to the Bayt al-Ma`mur. Then, it was revealed from the Bayt al-Ma`mur over a period of twenty years.
