جعفر بن أبي طالب

Hadith.521 - The Messenger of Allah (sw) said to Sayyida Fatimah Al-Zahra {S.A} when Ja'far ibn Abi Talib was martyred: "Do not supplicate with (expressions of) humiliation, loss, or desolation. Whatever you have said about him is true."

Hadith.546 - Imam al-Baqir (as) made a will specifying 800 dirhams to be used for his mourning gathering (ma'tam), as he saw this as part of the tradition (sunnah). This was because the Messenger of Allah (sw) said: "Prepare food for the family of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, for they are preoccupied [by their loss]."

following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that on the day of Mutah, Ja’far Ibn Abi Talib had a horse. When they came face to face with the enemy he disembarked from his horse and cut the legs of his horse with his sword, and it was the first such incident in al-Islam.”

When Ja’far ibn Abi Talib - may God be pleased with him - returned from Ethiopia where he had migrated to, it coincided with the conquering of Khaybar. The Prophet (MGB) stood up in front of him, kissed him on the forehead and said, ‘I do not know what has pleased me more? Is it the return of Ja’far or is it the conquering of Khaybar by God.’”(The compiler of the book said,) ‘I have narrated the traditions in this regard in the book Faza’el Ja’far ibn Abi Talib.

Hadith.548 - Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) said: "Eating [a meal] at the home of those afflicted with a loss is from the practices of the people of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliya), The sunnah (tradition) is to send food to them, as The Prophet (sw) ordered when the news of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib’s (as) martyrdom came”.

Hadith.549 - When Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (as) was killed, the Messenger of Allah (sw) instructed Sayyida Fatimah Al-Zahra {S.A} to go to Asma' bint Umays and her womenfolk and to prepare food for them for three days. Thus, this practice became a sunnah (tradition).

Hadith.527 - Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) said: "When The Prophet (sw) received news of the deaths of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (as) and Zayd ibn Harithah, he would weep intensely when he entered his house and would say, 'They used to converse with me and bring me comfort, and now they are both gone.'"

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) once gave a toothpick to Ja‘far ibn abu Talib (a.s.), and said, ‘O Ja‘far use a toothpick. It is beneficial for the mouth’ or he said, ‘It is beneficial for the gums and attracts sustenance.’”

“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that when Ja‘far ibn abu Talib was martyred, the Messenger of Allah instructed Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam, to prepare food for Asma’ bint ‘Umays for three days and visit her with a group of her women everyday for three days. This formed the tradition to prepare food for the people of the deceased for three days.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Ja‘far ibn abu Talib was with the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and he presented quince to the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet cut one piece from it and gave it to Ja‘far but he declined to eat it. The Holy Prophet said, ‘Take and eat it. It makes the heart (mind) intelligent and emboldens a coward heart.’ In another Hadith it is said, ‘Eat it; it clears the color and beautifies the child (to be born).”’

Abul Hasan Musa (a.s) summoned us and we gathered. Then he said: Do you know why I have summoned you? No, we answered. Witness that this son of mine is my testamentary trustee (Wasi) and one who will superintend my affair as my successor after me. Whoever has a debt (to be collected) from me, let him collect it from this son of mine. Whoever I have made a promise to; let him get its fulfillment from him. Whoever has to meet me, will only do so through his correspondence.

“Abu al-Hassan Musa (a.s.) once called all of us to see him. We all gathered and then he said to us, “Do you know why have I called you?” We said, “We do not know.” He then said, “Bear testimony that this my son is the executor of my will, the director of my affairs and the succeeding Imam (a.s.). Whoever has a loan due on me should demand from my son, this one. To whoever I may have promised anything should also acquire from him. Whoever must see me must not come to see me with writing from him.”

Hadith.1541 - In a narration from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, it is reported that one should say in the final prostration of the Salat of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (as): "O’ One who is clothed in might and dignity, O’ One who adorns Himself with majesty and nobility, O’ One for whom glorification is befitting and belongs to none but Him, O’ One whose knowledge encompasses all things, O’ Possessor of bounty and grace, O’ Bestower of favors and blessings, O’ One with power and generosity, I ask You by the pillars of might from Your Throne and by the ultimate mercy from Your Book and by Your greatest and highest Name and by Your perfect words to send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and to fulfil for me such and such (mentioning one’s needs)."

Bear witness that this - my son Ali is my Testamentary Trustee. He (s) is in charge of all my affairs. He (s) is my successor. Whoever has lent me something can take it back from him. Whoever has been given a promise by me should ask him to fulfill that promise. Whoever has to visit me in person can come to see me with a note from him.’”

in the year in which he died: I will be taken in this year and the authority (Amr) will belong to son, Ali, who is named after two Alis. The first Ali is Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s) and the second Ali is Ali bin Husain, the blessings of God be on them. He (i.e. Ali Ridha) is given understanding, forbearance, knowledge, help, love, piety and religion of the first and tribulation and endurance in the face of adversity of the second.

I heard him [the Imam] saying: May Allah have mercy on the sisters among the inhabitants of paradise and he named them: Asma bt. Umays al-Khath’amiyya who was married to Ja’far b. Abi Talib عليه السلام and Salma bt. Umays al-Khath’amiyya who was married to Hamza. Also on five [women] from the Bani Hilal: Maymuna bt. al-Harith who was married to the Prophet صلى الله عليه واله. Umm al-Fadhl who was married to al-Abbas [b. Abd al-Muttalib] and her name was Hind. al-Ghumaysa the mother of Khalid b. al-Walid. Azza who was with the [tribe of] Thaqif and married to al-Hajjaj b. Ghiladh. Finally Hamida who had no children.

God is kind to Heavenly sisters.” Then he (MGB) said their names as follows: Asma’, the daughter of Amis, from the Khasam clan and the wife of Ja’far ibn Abi Talib; Salmi, the daughter of Amis, and the wife of Hamzih; and five from the Hellal clan: Maymuna - the daughter of Al-Harith and the wife of the Prophet; Umm Al-Fazl Hind - the wife of Abbas ibn Abdul Mutalib; Qamisa - the mother of Khalid ibn Valid; Ezzat who was in the Saqif clan - the wife of Hajjaj ibn Qalaz; and Hamideh who did not have any children.”

“Will you let me tell you something?” God's Prophet (a.s) said: “Yes.” He said: “One day I went to see Naejashi. He was not wearing his official attire on that day, but I greeted him just as I would a ruler and said “O' king! Why is it that you are not seen in your official attire?” He said: “I have read in the Bible that whoever receives a divine blessing should thank God, and that nothing is better than humbleness as a form of being grateful to God. Since I heard that Muhammad (a.s) was victorious over the polytheists in Badr, I like to show my being grateful to God in this manner.”

Al-Najashi, the king of Abyssinia, sent for Ja’far ibn Abu Talib and his companions. When they called upon him, they saw him sitting on the dusty ground, wearing old clothes. Ja’far ibn Abu Talib said that when we saw him in that condition, we were taken by fear. But, upon sensing our concern and the change of colour in our faces, he said: "Praise be to Allah, Who helped Muhammad, peace be upon him and his progeny, and thus cooled and comforted my eyes! May I not give you good tidings?" I said: "Yes, O king." He said: "Just now, one of my informers in your lands has come to inform me that Allah helped His Prophet, Muhammad, peace be upon him and his progeny, and destroyed his enemy. And so-and-so has been taken prisoner and so-and-so has been killed. They had confronted each other at a place called Badr. As if I see him the way I used to tend my master’s cattle there, who was from Banu Zamrah." So Ja’far said to him: "O benign king! Why do I see you sit on the dust wearing the old attire?" He said: "O Ja’far, we read in what has been revealed to Isa, may Allah bless him, that it is Allah’s right over His servants that whenever He bestows a bounty upon them, they should show humility. So when Allah blessed Muhammad, His Prophet with the bounty, I profferred this humility before Him." He said: When the Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, learnt about this, he said to his companions: "Giving away in charity and alms increases the wealth of its owner, so give alms, may Allah have mercy on you. And humility elevates and enhances the stature of the one who adopts it, so be humble, may Allah elevate you. And to be forgiving increases the honour of the forgiver. So be forgiving, that Allah may bless you with honour."

“When Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib returned from Abyssinia, he said to the Messenger of Allah (ṣ), ‘Should I tell you about something that happened, O Messenger of Allah? I went to visit al-Najāshī one day and found that he was neither seated on his royal throne nor was he dressed in his kingly attire, and he appeared different than he normally would. So I greeted him the way kings are greeted and said to him, “O king, why is it that I see you seated in a different place, dressed in different apparel, and having an altered appearance?” He replied, “Verily we find in the Gospels: whoever is given a blessing by Allah, let him show gratitude to Allah [for that blessing]. We also find in the Gospels: there is no form of gratitude to Allah which is comparable to humility. And verily I have received word on this night that my cousin Muḥammad (ṣ) has been granted victory by Allah over the polytheists at Badr, so I wanted to thank Allah, the Exalted, in the way that you see.”’”
