“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Drinking water in three breaths is better than in one breath.’”

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’During the day drinking water when standing gives the body more power and good health.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited seeking cures from the hot fountains which are in mountains in which the smell of sulfur is found.’ It is said that it is of the smell of hell.”

“Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), has said, ‘Wine is made of five substances: Dates, raisins, wheat, barley and honey.’” Muhammad ibn Yahya from Muhammad ibn Ahmad has narrated from ibn abu Najran Safwan al- Jammal from ‘Amir ibn al-Simt from Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), a similar Hadith.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘When Noah (a.s.), disembarked from the ark, he established a plantation and of the things that he planted was a vine of grapes. He went back to his family and Iblis, may he be condemned, uprooted it. Noah (a.s.), went to his plantation. He found everything in its condition except the grape vine that was uprooted. He found Iblis, may he be condemned, nearby. Jibril ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came and informed him that Iblis, may he be condemned, has uprooted it. Noah asked Iblis, ‘What made you to uproot it? None of my plantations is more beloved to me than this. I by Allah will not allow it without being planted? Iblis said, ‘I, by Allah, will not allow it to grow without my uprooting? He asked Noah to give him a share? He (the Imam) said, ‘Noah then gave him a share of one-third but he rejected. He gave him one-half and he rejected. Noah also refused to increase but Jibril ‘Alayhi al-Salam said to Noah, ‘O Messenger of Allah, you should do him a favor because it comes from you? Noah then noticed that the authority over it is given to him so Noah (a.s.) left two-thirds for him? Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If you have grape juice; boil it until two-thirds of it evaporates; then eat and drink and that (which is gone evaporated) is the share of Satan?”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’Every time Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent a Prophet, it was in the knowledge of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, that in the case of completing his religion wine must have been made unlawful. It had to remain unlawful, however, religion is to change the habits one after the other. Were such change to take place at once people would boycott religion as a whole.’ Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘No one is more kind than Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, and it is of the kindness of Allah, most Blessed, most High, that He transfers them from one habit to the other. Were He to change them at once they would have been destroyed.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘My intercession will not apply to those who take their Salat (prayer) lightly and he will not be able to reach before me on the pond. No, by Allah my intercession will not apply to those who drink intoxicating liquor and will not be able to come to me on the pond, no, by Allah (it will not happen).”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The wine drinker must not be visited when he is sick. His funeral must not be attended, he must not be relied on when he testifies and must not be married when he proposes for marriage. You must not trust him about a trust.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘I do not perform Salat (prayer) on the dead body of one drowned in wine (a wine drinker).”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one drinks one sip of wine his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days.’”

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days. If he returns to drink again Allah will make him drink from Tinah of Khabal, which he (the Imam) said, is a liquid that comes out of the vagina of fornicators.’”

“Once a man asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is drinking wine more evil or not performing Salat (prayer)?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Drinking wine is more evil.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Do you know why?’ The man said, ‘No, I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is because he ends up in a condition in which he does not know his Lord.’”

“One day abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), initiating from himself and without my asking said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, all intoxicating liquor is unlawful.’ I then asked saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, is all of it unlawful?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, even one sip is unlawful.’”

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, addressed the people in which he (the Messenger of Allah) said, “Every intoxicating liquor is unlawful for consumption.’””

“I once wrote to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and asked about a man to whom a medicine for curing hemorrhoid gases is sent to drink in an amount that in the form of hard al-Nabidh makes one drunk. He does not drink it for pleasure but as medicine? He (the Imam) said, ‘No, not even one sip of it is lawful? He (the Imam) then said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has not placed any cure as medicine in what He has prohibited?”

“I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about wiping on slippers because of Taqiyah (caution due to fear). He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no Taqiyah (caution because of fear) in three things.’ I then asked, ‘What are they?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is drinking wine,’ or he said, ‘Drinking intoxicating liquor, wiping on slippers and Mut‘ah (advantage) of al-Hajj.”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Juice (grape juice) is not unlawful until it boils.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not unlawful to drink juice (grape juice) up to six days.’ Ibn abu ‘Umayr has said, ‘It means that it does not become intoxicating liquor and unlawful before it comes to a boil.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Any juice (grape juice) which fire has touched is unlawful to use until two-thirds of it is evaporated and only one-third has remained.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who recommends the use of boiled juice (grape juice) and he is not one of our people. He (the Imam) said, ‘If he is one who considers intoxicating substances lawful, then do not use it but if he considers it unlawful then you can use it for drink,’ or that he (the Imam) said, ‘You can drink it.’”
