13-1 Muḥammad b. ʿAlī Mājīlawayh, may God be pleased with him, narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-ʿAṭṭār narrated to us; from Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā, he said: Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; from ʿAlī b. Jaʿfar; from Mughīrah; from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (ʿas); from his father (ʿas); from his grandfather (ʿas), who said
"There are thirteen species of metamorphosed animals from the children of Adam. From these are the monkey, the pig, the bat, the mastigure, the bear, the elephant, the triops, the hagfish, the scorpion, Canopus, the hedgehog, Venus, and the spider. The monkey was a group of Israelites who would go down to the seashore to transgress the Sabbath. They would catch fish, so God transformed them into monkeys. Pigs were a group of Israelites against whom Jesus (ʿas), son of Mary, prayed, and God transformed them into pigs. The bat was a woman with a baby she was nursing, and she mocked it, so God transformed her into a bat. The mastigure was a Bedouin man who would not spare from slaughter any that passed by him, so God transformed him into a mastigure. The bear was a man who would rob pilgrims, so God transformed him into a bear. The elephant was a man who would commit zoophilia, and God transformed him into an elephant. The triops was an adulterer who forsook nothing, so God transformed him into a triops. The hagfish was a calumnious man whom God transformed into a hagfish. The scorpion was a mocker of people behind their backs and to their faces, so God transformed him into a scorpion. Canopus was a tithe-collector and tax-collector, so God transformed him into a star. Venus was a woman who tried Hārūt and Mārūt, so God transformed her. The spider was an ill-mannered woman, disobedient to her husband, turning away from him, so God transformed her into a spider. The hedgehog was an ill-mannered man, so God transformed him into a hedgehog."
