Imam Ali (AS) said, The gratitude of a believer is manifested in his action.

Imam Ali (AS) said, A believer is thankful in [times of] comfort, patient in tribulation and fearful in affluence.

Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The believer is grateful in times of prosperity, patient during tribulation, and fearful in times of ease.

Imam Ali (AS) said, A believer is [always] between blessing and wrongdoing, [and] nothing reforms these two except thankfulness and repentance.

Imam Ali (AS) said, A believer constantly remembers [Allah], frequently contemplates, is thankful for blessings and patient in the face of tribulation.

Imam Ali (AS) said, When a believer observes, he takes lesson; and when he is quiet, he contemplates; and when he speaks, he remembers [Allah]; and when he is given, he is grateful; and when he undergoes hardship, he is patient.

The Noble Prophet (a.s) said: “Whenever a believer gets full, stops eating and drinking and praises God, God grants him the reward of one who fasts. God is Grateful and loves to be praised.”

Imam Ali (AS) said, The cheerfulness of a believer is in his face and his sorrow is in his heart. He has the broadest chest (i.e. has great patience, knowledge and virtue) and is most humble in spirit. He hates high position and dislikes renown. His grief is long, his sorrow is distant, his silence is much and his time is occupied. He is grateful and patient, submerged in his thoughts [about the Hereafter], sparing in his friendship, easy going and of soft temperament. He is firmer than a hard rock but humbler than a slave.

Imam Sadiq (a.s) said: “A believer should have eight traits: (1) He should maintain his dignity when calamities befall him, (2) he should be patient when he is in trouble, (3) he should be grateful when he has plenty of blessings, (4) he should be content with his share of God-given daily bread, (5) he should not be oppressive with his enemies, (6) he should not be a burden on his friends, (7) he should use his body (to perform his duties), and (8) the people should be safe from him. Knowledge is like a believer's friend, patience is like his prime minister, and perseverance is like the head of his army. Kindness is like his brother, and gentleness is like his father.”

“I swear by My Majesty and My Honor that I have not created any creature dearer to Me than a believer. That is why I put My own name (believer) on him. He should be content with My action if I deprive him of whatever lies between the East and the west, or if I bestow on him whatever exists between the East and the West. He should be patient with any catastrophes that I descend upon him, and he should be grateful for My blessings. O' Muhammad! Please record his name among the honest ones near Me.”

Imam Sadiq (a.s) said: “God told Moses the son of Imran (a.s) in one of His revelations: “O' Moses! I have not created anything dearer than My believing servant. I will make him suffer for what is better for him, and then give him a reward that is better for him. I know best what is better for him. He must persevere in the face of My hardships, and be grateful for My blessings. He must be content with My decree. If he acts according to My decree and oobeys Me, then I will record him as being one of the Righteous.”

“It is worthwhile of a believer to have eight qualities: (a) Dignity in volatile conditions, (b) patience on facing a misfortune, (c) gratitude in comfortable conditions, (d) contentment with what Allah has given him for sustenance, (e) justice for enemies, (f) not to be a burden for the friends, (g) that his own body be tired of him and that (h) people be comfortable with him.’ “Knowledge is the friend of the believer, forbearance is his secretary, patience is the commander of his army, courteousness is his brother and speaking softly is his father.”

A believer should possess eight qualities: (He is) dignified in times of turbulence, patient in adversity, grateful in prosperity, content with what Allah has provided, not oppress the enemies, not burden friends with his body in toil, and provide comfort to people. Knowledge is the believer's friend, forbearance is his minister, patience is the commander of his troops, gentleness is his brother, and kindness is his father.“

A believer should have eight characteristics: (1) [they should be] dignified with calamities, (2) patient with tribulation, (3) thankful when relaxed, and (4) content with what Allah has given him of sustenance. (5) He should not wrong the enemies, and (6) he should not be a burden on his friends. (7) He should tire his body, and (8) the people should be at ease because of him. Surely, knowledge is the friend of the believer; forbearance is his vizier, patience is the commander of his forces, kindness is his brother, and gentleness is his father.

“O Ali!
