ابن أبي نجران

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the flesh of dogs. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is metamorphosed.’ I asked, ‘Is it unlawful for food?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is Najis (unclean). I repeat it three times for you and each one says it is Najis (unclean).”’

“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Of the signs of lies in a liar is his telling you news of heaven, earth. East and West, but when you ask him about what Allah has made unlawful and what He has made lawful, you will find nothing with him (devoid of the knowledge of Shari’a).”’

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), issued a judgment about the case of a free woman who was cheated by a slave who married her and she did not know him to be other than a free man. He (the Imam) said, ‘They must be separated if the woman so wanted.’”

“Once I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘Certain people commit sins and say that they hope. They continue until their death arrives.’ The Imam said, ‘Such people have strayed away in hopes. They lie and they do not have any hope. Whoever hopes to have something, he tries to find it. People fearing something, run away from it.’”

Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said (as part of a longer Ḥadīth): After saying Salām to the martyrs, come (back) to the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) and face the grave and establish as many prayers as possible.

“Do not befriend blasphemers and do not associate with them; people may consider you as one of them. The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘A man follows the religion of his friend and associates.’”

“When you visit a patient say, ‘I seek protection for you from Allah, the Great Lord of the great Throne against the evil of every swelling vein and the evil of the heat of fire,’ seven times.’”

“This is a narration of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Messenger of Allah) has said, ‘You must not hire a dimwitted woman for breastfeeding; the milk spreads and the boy is drawn to the milk, that is, to the frivolity and dimwittedness of the breastfeeding woman.’”

And whatever is narrated in various reports regarding the legal cases of Amir Al-Muʾminin, peace be upon him, I have narrated it from my father and from Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan - may Allah (swt) be pleased with them - from Saʿd ibn Abdullah, from Ibrahim ibn Hashim, from Abd Al-Rahman ibn Abi Najran, from Aṣim ibn Humayd, from Muhammad ibn Qays, from Abu Jafar, peace be upon him.

I heard Aba Abdullah as-Sadiq (MGB) say, ‘We are members of a Household whose chivalry is to forgive those who have oppressed us.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about grape juice which is cooked on fire until it boils for one hour; then the owner drinks it. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it changes and boils, it then becomes devoid of goodness until two-thirds of it is evaporated and only one-third has remained.’”

Abu Ja’far (asws) having said: ‘You will not see that which you all are waiting for (Al-Qaim (asws)) until you become like the dead goat for whom the lion does not care where it places its paws on. There will be no honour for you to rise up to, and no supporter to lend you his support in your matters’.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one speaks of the glory of Allah after completing an obligatory Salah (prayer) in the form of Tasbih of Fatimah al-Zahra’, ‘Alayha al-Salam, one hundred times and following this says, “No one deserves to be worshipped except Allah,” Allah forgives him.’”

“In response to my question before abu Ja’far (a.s.), about al-Mut‘ah (advantageous marriage), he (the Imam) said, ‘It is mentioned in al-Quran, “If you marry them for al-Mut‘ah (advantageous marriage) you must pay their dowries. There is no harm if you reach an understanding among yourselves about mahr (the dowry). Allah is All-knowing and All-wise.’”” (4:24)

“I heard abu Ja‘far (a.s.), say, ‘If one walks in the procession for the burial of a deceased until Salah (prayer) for a deceased is complete and then returns back, his reward is one qirat. If one walks until burial is complete, his reward is two qirat and one qirat is of the size of the mountain of ’Uhud.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not harmful to touch al-Khuluq in the bathhouse or touch to cure cracks in your hand, but I do not like to always use it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful to use al-Khuluq but one must not sleep overnight with it.’”

“I once said to abu Ja‘far (a.s.), that a man made a will to another man about his assets, one-third or one-fourth of his legacy, and then the testator is killed mistakenly. He (the Imam) said, ‘Funds must be kept aside for this will from his legacy and the wergild.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who passes through Makkah on his way to Yemen or other lands and finds other people traveling for al-Hajj, so he joins them to al-Mashahid (memorial places); if it is sufficient for Hajjahta al-Islam. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is sufficient.’”

“Once a Christian man sneezed in the presence of Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) and the people said, ‘May Allah guide you.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) said, ‘Say, “May Allah grant you mercy.’” They said, ‘He is a Christian.’ The Imam said, ‘Allah will not guide him until He grants him mercy.’”

“When Allah (swt) created the intellect (al-'Aql) He made it speak and said to it, ‘Come forward', so it came forward. He then said, 'Go back' and it went back. Then Allah said, 'I swear by My Honor and Glory that I have not created any creation more beloved to Me than you. I will not perfect you in anyone except those whom I love. I will command you [to obey me] and prohibit you [from disobeying me] and I will reward you [for obeying me] and I will punish you [for disobeying me].'"
