“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘If one drinks one sip of wine his Salat (prayer) is not accepted forty days.’”

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘A wine addict will meet Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, when he will meet Him, as a worshipper of idols will do.’”

“Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has created certain locks for evil. He has made wine the key to those locks. Lying is more evil than wine.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, and abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have made it clear that wine is the head of all sins.’”

“About the case of a man to whom another man owes a certain amount of dirham who sells wine or pig when he (the creditor) is looking, then pays him from such funds. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful. For the creditor it is lawful and for the seller it is unlawful.’”

“Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘A wine addict is like an idol worshipper.’”

13. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “One who puts intoxicant in one of his veins, the Almighty Allah will involve that single vein in three hundred and sixty kinds of punishments.”

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘One who refuses to receive Zakat, when it is obligatory on him to receive is like one who refuses to pay Zakat when it is obligatory on him to pay.”

Prophet (s.a.w.s.) who said: “When a drunkard comes on the Day of Judgment, he would be blind and his face, black. His back will be bent and spit will be overflowing from his mouth. His forehead will be tied to his toes. His hands will be coming out of his loins. The people assembled there will be horrified upon seeing the way he is taken for the accounting of his deeds.”

Intoxication is (by the type of) four intoxications: intoxication from drink; intoxication from (abundance of) property; intoxication due to (lack of) sleep; and intoxication of (possessing) rulership.

He can have his dirhams.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If one becomes a Muslim and owns wine and pigs, then dies while they are in his possession, and he owes a certain amount of debts, his creditor or guardian can sell his wine and pigs to non-Muslims to pay off his debts; but in his life time he cannot sell or keep them.’”

The Messenger of Allah (s) said: There are four things that will not enter a household except that it will ruin it, and it cannot be built up in blessing: (1) betrayal, (2) thievery, (3) drinking wine, and (4) adultery.

“About the case of a man who has a slave whom he has left at a vineyard to sell grapes or juice, but the slave goes and squeezes wine and sells it, abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’The price received is not useable.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Once a man from Thaqif presented to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, two sacks of wine and the Messenger of Allah commanded to throw them away and said, “The One who has prohibited its drinking has prohibited to accept its price also.’” Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘The best thing to do about what this slave has done is to give it as charity.’”

“I once asked one of the two Imam, (abu Ja’far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about al- Nabidh which has stopped boiling. He (the Imam) said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ’All intoxicating substances are unlawful/ I then asked him (the Imam) about utensils. He (the Imam) has stated this Hadith. ’The Messenger of Allah, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to your cause, has prohibited the use of al-Diba ’ (pumpkins) used in fermenting al-Nabidh. Also prohibited for such use is al-Hantam (the pot made of asphalt-coated clay), to which you have added oiled pottery, and al-Ghadar (what is made of palm tree trunks coated with asphalt) in which wine is brewed to make it of better quality.’ I asked him (the Imam) about large green containers and lead. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

Abu `Abdillah Ja`far b. Muhammad al-Sadiq (as) was asked about wine, so he said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: The first things that my Lord prohibited for me were worshiping statues, drinking wine, and quarrelling with men – surely, Allah raised me as a mercy to the worlds – and stringed instruments, wind instruments; and the affairs of Jahiliyya, its statues, its rites, and its impurities. My Lord swore, saying: “No servant of Mine will drink wine in this world except that he will be fed the same quantity in boiling water in the Resurrection, punished or forgiven.” So, he (as) said: Do not sit with one who drinks wine, do not marry him, and do not arrange for him to be married. If he becomes ill, then do not visit him. If he dies, then do not attend his funeral. Surely, a drinker of wine will come on the Day of Resurrection with a darkened face, bleary-eyed, slanted mouth, drooling, with his tongue dangling from the back of his mouth.
