Imam Ali (AS) said, Allah, the Glorified, does not pass any decree for the servant who is satisfied with it but that there is benefit in it for him.

Imam Ali (AS) said, Verily the one who struggles with his [lower] self, in obedience to Allah and against disobedience to Him, has the status of a virtuous martyr in the sight of Allah.

Imam Ali (AS) said, We praise Allah, the Glorified, for the ability He has granted us to carrying out [acts of] obedience and to keep away from disobedience.

Imam Ali (AS) said, When this world comes towards a servant, it covers him with the merits of others and when it turns its back from him it snatches away his [own] merits.

Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Repentance stands on four pillars: remorse with the heart, asking for forgiveness with the tongue, work with the limbs, and resolve not to repeat [the offense].

Imam Ali (AS) said, Put the armoured man forward and the unarmoured one behind, and grit your teeth because this will make the swords skip off the skulls.

Imam Ali (AS) said, Faces bow down in front of the greatness of Allah, hearts tremble out of fear of Him and souls are sacrificed for His pleasure.

Imam Ali (AS) said, Some of the bad choices are fighting [and seeking to overpower] ones equals, unveiling an enemy and showing hostility towards one who is able to do harm.

Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘By Allah, no sooner does a community dissent after their prophet than falsehood prevails over the truth, save that which Allah wills…

Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘By my life, never will I compromise with or be slack when fighting anyone who opposes the truth or one who has fallen into transgression.

Imam Ali (AS) said, In an age when corruption prevails over a people, if a man thinks positive of another man then he has put himself in peril.

Imam Ali (AS) said, A leader needs a wise mind, an eloquent tongue and a heart that is steadfast in the establishment of truth.

Imam Baqir (a.s) said: “A believer will suffer from calamities in this world according to his religiousness.”

Imam Ali (a.s) said: “Three things make a Muslim perfect: religious insight, ability to earn a living and patience during times of hardship.”

Imam Sajjad (a.s) said: “Whoever gets any money or gift for this knowledge will never gain any benefits from this knowledge.”

Imam Hussein (a.s) was asked about the meaning of the Arabic word “Najdeh”. He replied: “It means attempting to do great things, and persevering in the face of difficulties and defending your believing brothers.”

‘You may hit your stumpers for running away in fright but not because of their stumbling.’”

How beautiful is the quest for trade to sail on the sea!”’ [Note: H 9118 and H 9119 appear to occur during two different eras, perhaps of safe and unsafe sailing times]

Muhammad b. Ya`qub al-Kulayni from `Ali b. Muhammad also known as `Alan from Muhammad al-Faraj al-Rakhji. He said: I wrote to Abi’l Hasan `Ali b. Muhammad b. `Ali b. Musa b. Ja`far b. Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) asking him about what Hisham b. al-Hakam said regarding the body [of Allah] and what Hisham b. Salim said regarding the form. So, he (as) wrote: Leave the perplexity of the perplexed and seek refuge in Allah from Satan. The [correct] doctrine is not what the two Hishams have said.

“I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), this question: ‘There is one who has sustenance for only one day, or for only one month or one year. Should he give preference to another person who does not have sustenance even for one day, or one month or one year, or in all cases, is there no blame in not giving preference because of sustenance being barely enough for himself? He (the Imam) said, ‘There are two issues. Those of you who are more inclined to giving preference to others over themselves are excellent. Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, has said, “They give preference to others over themselves even though they themselves are in dire need.” (59:9) The other issue is that in not giving preference to others over themselves, they are not blamed; however, a providing hand has the upper hand over a non-providing hand, but you must begin with your dependents.’”
