I asked Imam (as) about the inheritance share of the daughters of a daughter and a grandfather. Imam (as) replied: "The grandfather receives one-sixth, and the remainder goes to the daughters of the daughter."

"The daughters of the sister receive one-third of the inheritance, and the remainder goes to the grandfather."

The kalala is when there is no parent nor child (to someone).

I asked Imam Ali ibn Musa Ar-Ridha (as) about the guardian of orphans whose wards have reached maturity. He offers them their rightful wealth, but they refuse to take it. What should he do? Imam (as) said: "He must return their wealth to them and compel them to take it."

“About the case of daughters of a sister and a grandfather, abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The daughter of a sister receives one-third and the rest is for the grandfather; the daughters of the sister take the place of the sister and have made the grandfather like a brother.”’

“I once visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when Aban ibn Taghlib was with him (the Imam) and I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, my daughter has died and my mother is alive.’ Aban said, ‘There is nothing for your mother.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘Allah is free of all defects, give her one-sixth.’”

“Abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal (a.s.), has said, ‘Granddaughters replace their mother if the deceased does not leave behind any daughters and there is no other heir. Daughters of one’s son replace one’s son if the deceased does not leave behind any daughters of children and there are no other heirs besides them.’”

“I once asked him [abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.) ] about the case of a man who has a son, whom he called his son then denied and removed him from the list of his heirs, and I am the executor of the will. What must I do? He, al-Rida’ ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘He is considered his son because of his confession in public. The executor of the will cannot remove him from anything that he knows.’”

“Abu "Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, "If a deceased leaves behind two brothers, they are considered more than two brothers of the deceased and they bar the mother from one-third. If there is one brother he does not bar the mother.’ He (the Imam) said, "If there are four sisters they bar the mother from one-third because they are like two brothers but if there are three sisters they do not bar the mother’s share.’”

I asked Aba Abdillah عليه السلام about a woman who wills that one-third [of her inheritance] should be used to pay off her debt and a “portion” of it should be given to a man and a woman [her relatives]. I [Abdallah b. Sinan] did not know that [i.e. what “portion” meant]. They took me to Ibn Abi Layla who said: they are to be given nothing. He [the Imam] said: He has lied by Allah! they are to be given one-tenth of the one-third.

I used to attend at Ibn Abi Layla with regards to inheritance, and he used to push me. When that had (lasted for a) prolonged (time), I complained about him to Ja’far ibn Muhammed, peace be upon them both, so he said: Does he not know that the Messenger of Allah, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Family, ordered for the return of the restrained and the fulfilment of inheritance? He said: Then I went to him, and he did what he used to do, so I said to him: I complained about you to Ja’far bin Muhammed, peace be upon them both, and he said to me such-and-such. Then Ibn Abi Layla made me swear that he said that, so I swore to him, and he ruled to my favor in that (case).

I asked him about the hameel, and he said: And what thing is hameel? I said: A woman who is taken as captive from her land and with her is a small child, and so she says: «He is my son», and a man who is taken as captive and meets his brother, and so he says: «He is my brother», while they have no proof except for their saying. He said: And what do the people among you say? I said: That they do not pass on inheritance to them if they have no proof of their birth; that the birth was only in a period of polytheism. He said: Glory be to Allah (how strange that is). If she brings her son or daughter, and she does not cease from declare it, and if the man recognizes his brother and it would be by the declaration of both as correct, and they do not cease to declare that, they will inherit each other.
