I heard Abā Ja’far the Second (Imam Jawād (a.s.)) say: Those who go to the Ziyārah of the grave of my father (a.s.) will be rewarded with Paradise.

The Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.) said: On the Day of Judgment, I will intercede for those who have come to my Ziyārah.

Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) said: Going to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) is equal to performing a purified Hajj with the Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.).

I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) say: Go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) even if it is only once a year.

I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) say: There is no prophet in the heavens or on earth who does not ask Allāh for permission to go to the Ziyārah of Ḥusain (a.s.). (There is always) a crowd (of prophets) descending (to go to the Ziyārah of Ḥusain (a.s.)) and a crowd ascending (back to the heavens).

Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) said: Going to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.), or the grave of the Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.), or the graves of the Martyrs (of Uḥud) is equal to performing a purified Hajj with the Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.).

(Imam Sādiq (a.s.) said): Those who want their struggle at the time of death to be made easy for them, those who want their fear for that which is coming (Judgment) to be reduced, and those who want to be able to look at Allāh on the Day of Judgment, should increasingly go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.). Verily the Ziyārah of Ḥusain (a.s.) is the Ziyārah of the Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.).

Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) said: Those from among our Shia who do not go to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) are lacking in faith and their belief is incomplete. And even if they enter Paradise, their position will be lower than that of the believers.

I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) say, “The location of the grave of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) has been a garden from the gardens of Paradise since the day he was buried in it.” I also heard him say, “The location of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) is an oasis from the oases of Paradise.”

I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) say: There is no angel in the heavens or on earth who does not ask Allāh for permission to go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.). (There is always) a crowd descending (to go to the Ziyārah of Ḥusain (a.s.)) and a crowd ascending (back to the heavens).

‘Ali (the Commander of the Believers (a.s.)) said: Praying a recommended prayer in this mosque (Mosque of Kūfah) is equal to performing an ‘Umrah with the Prophet (s.a.a.w.), and praying an obligatory prayer in it is equal to performing a Hajj with the Prophet (s.a.a.w.). Indeed one thousand prophets and one thousand successors have prayed in this mosque.

I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) say: Allāh has dedicated seventy thousand angels to the grave of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) who worship Allah next to him. Each of their prayers is equal to one thousand prayers of a human being, and the reward for their prayers is registered for those who go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) – may Allāh’s curse, the curse of the angels, and the curse of all of the people be upon those who killed him for all eternity.

Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) and I passed by Baqī’ and we walked by the grave of a man from among the Shia of Kūfah. I said to Abī Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)), “May I sacrifice myself for you! This is the grave of one of the Shia.” Imam (a.s.) stopped next to the grave and said: O Allāh! Have mercy on his isolation; connect with him in his loneliness; keep him company in his desolation; make him feel safe in his (time of) fear; descend Your Mercy on him in a way that he will not need the mercy of others; and join him with those whom he loved.

I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “How should I say Salām to the people of the graves?” Imam (a.s.) replied: Recite (the following): Salām upon the people of the graves from among the believers and the Muslims. You have preceded us and we shall join you In-Shā`allāh. The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chain: My father, from Ḥusain ibn Ḥasan ibn Abān, from Muḥammad ibn Ūramah, from Ibn Abī Najrān, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Sinān, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.).

I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “What is the reward for those who go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) while knowing his rights and without any pride or arrogance?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “One thousand accepted Hajj and one thousand purified ‘Umrah will be registered for them. And (even) if they are among the wretched ones, they will be registered among the blissful ones and they will be continuously submerged in the Mercy of Allāh.”

Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: When you take from the clay of the Oppressed One (Imam Ḥusain (a.s.)) and place it in your mouth, recite (the following): O Allāh! I ask You through the right of this dust, through the right of the angel who held it, through the right of the Prophet who embraced it, and through the right of the Imam who is buried in it to send Your blessing on Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, and to allow it to be a beneficial cure and an extensive sustenance for me, and (allow it) to be my protection against any fear and disease. Verily if you recite this, Allāh will cure you and bestow you with good health.

I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) say: Go to the Ziyārah of Ḥusain (a.s.) even if it is (only) once a year. Verily anyone, who goes to him knowing his rights and without denying (his status), will be recompensed with Paradise, with abundant increase of his sustenance, and with immediate happiness which will be brought to him by Allāh. The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chain: A group of our companions, from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Muḥammad ibn Ḥusain ibn Abil Khaťťāb, from Ḥasan ibn Maḥbūb, from Sabbāḥ Al-Ḥadhā, from Muḥammad ibn Marwān, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.).

I was with Abī Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) when a man entered, said Salām to the Imam (a.s.), and sat down. “Where are you from?” Imam (a.s.) asked the man. “I am from Kūfah. I believe in your Wilāyah and I am one of your lovers,” the man said. “…Do you go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) once a week?” Imam (a.s.) asked. “No,” the man replied. “What about once a month?” Imam (a.s.) asked. “No,” the man replied. “What about once a year?” Imam (a.s.) asked. “No,” the man replied. “Verily you are deprived of the good (blessings),” Imam (a.s.) said.

I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “May I sacrifice myself for you! What is the reward and the recompense for those who go to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.)?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “O Shu’ayb! No one establishes prayers next to him without Allāh accepting it and no one prays for anything next to him without it being fulfilled (either) immediately or in the future.” I said, “May I sacrifice myself for you! Tell me more.” Imam (a.s.) replied: O Shu’ayb! The least (rewarding statement) with which a Zā`ir of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) will be addressed is: O Slave of Allāh! Verily your (past) sins have been forgiven. Therefore, start again with new deeds.

Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) said: Verily Ḥusain (a.s.), the man of Karbalā, was killed while he was oppressed, anguished, thirsty, and grieved. It is truly fitting that every grieved person, every anguished person, every sinful person, every saddened person, every thirsty person, and every ill person who goes to (the Ziyārah of) Ḥusain (a.s.), who prays next to his grave and seeks nearness to Allāh, the Great and Almighty, through him, will have his grief removed by Allāh and He will fulfill his requests, forgive his sins, prolong his life, and increase his sustenance. “So take warning, O you who have eyes!” (59:2).
