“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’Performing Sujud (prostration) on earth is obligatory and on a prayer mat is a tradition.”

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said that woman when performing Sajdah (prostration) should not spread herself and man should spread himself on the ground.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Sajdah (prostration) on the saddle while on horseback, has said, ‘He must clear the place for his Sajdah (prostration).”’

One must not perform Sajdah (prostration) on an item on which none of the parts of his body rests.’” (According to Arabic footnote this Hadith is because of Taqiyah)

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), disliked performing Sajdah (prostration) on a piece of paper with writing on it.’”

“I once was in the presence of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), in his home in al-Madinah. He initiating a conversation saying, ‘One who completes his Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) does not face any dread in the grave.’”

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said, ‘If one knows the kind of mistake he has made and completes it then Sajdah (prostration) for mistake is not necessary for him. Sajdah (prostration) for mistake is upon one who does not know if he has increased or decreased something in Salah (prayer).”’

“One of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not read anything of al-‘Aza”im in any of obligatory Salah (prayer); Sajdah (prostration) becomes an addition in an obligatory Salah (prayer).’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once my father asked for a prayer mat but I was not fast enough, so he took a handful of pebbles, placed them on the furnishing and performed Sajdah (prostration) on them.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If you do not know whether you have performed five Rak‘at or four, perform two Sajdah (prostration) because of mistake after Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) in a sitting position and thereafter say Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace).”’

“I saw abu al-Hassan (a.s.), when leaving through the door of Masjid. He bowed down in prostration. He then stood up and turned his face to al-Ka‘bah and said, ‘O Allah, I go back with my affirmation that no one deserves worship except You.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about lime which is fired with feces (dung) and bones of dead animals, then is used in the construction of Masjid. Is performing Sajdah (prostration) permissible on it?’ He (the Imam) wrote with his own hand writing, ‘Water and fire have cleansed it.’”

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who performs Sajdah (prostration) on wet growing items. He (the Imam) said, ‘If your forehead touches the ground it is not harmful.’ I asked about stationary grass on the ground and dry leaves while he touches the ground. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘You must not perform Sujud (prostration) on anything except earth or on what grows from earth except cotton and linen.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Sajdah (prostration) wearing a turban which prevents his face from falling on the earth. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not sufficient until his forehead touches the earth.’”

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) on his stumper. He (the Imam) said, ‘He makes gestures for Sujud (prostrations) lower than the gesture for Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees).’ I then asked, ‘Can he perform Salah (prayer) while walking? He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, but in the form of gestures and make the one for Sujud (prostrations) lower than that for RukuV”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about silk furnishings and similarly about brocaded items, prayer rugs of silk and of brocaded ones; if it is proper for a man to sleep on it, perform Salat (prayer) or lean against it. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can spread it and stand on it but he cannot perform Sajdah (prostration) on it.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When anyone of you may recite the chapters of the Holy Quran wherein is the verse calling for prostration, in the prostration for such recitation you should say, “O Lord, I have prostrated before You as a servant and in submission before You. I do not assume arrogance in worshipping You, refrain or consider myself by far exalted than performing acts of worship. The fact is that I am a weak servant, afraid and seeking (Your) protection.’””

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said, ‘If anything of the four al-‘Aza’’im is read and you hear them, perform Sajdah (prostration), even if you are not with a valid Wudu’, or have experienced sexual relation, even if a woman does not perform Salah (prayer) (due to Hayd (menses)). In the case of the rest of al-Quran, you can perform Sajdah (prostration) or do not perform, it is your choice.’”

When a worshiper says whilst in prostration: "O Allah, O Lord, O Master! (ya Allah, ya rabbah, ya sayyidah)" three times, He responds: "Here I am, My servant, ask for your need."
