“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Advance payment to receive goods in future is lawful if the length and width is made known.’”

I said to Abu Abdullah (as): "A man travels for trade to Mecca or has camels that he rents out. Is his Hajj considered incomplete or complete?" Imam (as) said: "No, rather his Hajj is complete."

“I once wrote to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), and asked, ‘I make an advance payment deal with a man for foodstuff and when it is due time I do not have any foodstuff, if I can give him dirhams in exchange. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, you can do so.”’

Imam (as) said: "Whoever appoints a man as an agent to execute a matter, the agency remains valid permanently until he informs him of its termination, just as he informed him of its initiation."

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who contracted for purchasing an animal or foodstuff in the form of advance payment with al-Rahn (security deposit). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful to secure your asset.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a man who bought one hundred sheep; if so and so many of them were changed. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not permissible and it is not lawful. 5 ”

“I once asked al-Rida’ (a.s.), about the case of a Christian man who had become a Muslim and he, in his possession, had wine and pigs and he owed debts; if he could sell the wine and pigs to pay off his debts. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, he cannot do so.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who goes out for trade to Makkah or that he has a camel that he has given for hire to transport people; if his al-Hajj is complete or defective. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, but it is complete al-Hajj.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam has said, that when the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, arrived in al-Madinah he drew a line around its houses and said, ‘O Allah, do not make it a blessing for those who sell its houses.”’

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who passes through Makkah on his way to Yemen or other lands and finds other people traveling for al-Hajj, so he joins them to al-Mashahid (memorial places); if it is sufficient for Hajjahta al-Islam. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is sufficient.’”

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about selling palm trees for two years. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’ I then asked if fresh dates can be sold in the form of one or several pickings fresh from the trees each time they ripen. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘My father would sell the plant of henna in the manner of several harvests.’”

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘There will come a biting time upon people. Everyone will keep tight with whatever is in his hand and forget about generosity. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, ‘You must not forget generosity among yourselves.’ (2:239) At that time a people appears who deals (unjustly) with helpless people and they are the wicked ones.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you decide to buy an animal, say this, “O Allah, if this is of great blessings, extra benefits and of a fortunate nature, I pray to You to make its purchasing easy for me. If it is otherwise, then turn me to what is better than this; You know and I do not know. You have power over all things but I do not have such power and You know the unseen.” You should say this three times’”

“I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who hires a man to dig for him a well as deep as ten times the height of a man for ten dirham; but then he fails to do so because of weakness. He (the Imam) said, ’Ten must be divided into fifty-five of which one is for the first length, two for the second and three for the third in the same way until the tenth.’”

“I once took a slave-girl to abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam. He (the Imam) bargained and I also bargained very hard. I then sold her to him (the Imam) and he (the Imam) shook my hand and I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I bargained hard to see if it was permissible or not and I said, “I reduce the price by ten dinar.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘Never, however, this could have happened before shaking hands. Have you not heard the words of the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, “Asking for reduction after handshake is unlawful”?”’

I heard Abu Abdullah (as) say: A group of captives from Yemen were brought to the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family). When they reached Al-Juhfa, their provisions ran out, so they sold a young girl whose mother was with them. When they arrived before the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family), He (sw) heard the girl crying and asked: "What is this?" They replied: "O Messenger of Allah (swt), we needed provisions, so we sold her daughter." The Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family) then sent someone to bring her back and said: "Sell them both together or keep them both together."

I said to Imam (as), "A man comes to me asking to buy silk, but I do not have any. We negotiate about profit and payment terms until we agree on something. Then I go and buy it for him and invite him to complete the transaction." Imam (as) said: "What if he finds another deal that he prefers over what you have, can he leave you and go for it? Or if you find a better deal, can you leave him and pursue it?" I said: "Yes." Imam (as) said: "Then there is no harm."

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who comes to me and asks for certain goods of silk but I do not have anything as such, ‘Consider if he finds a better deal than this; can he change and go for that deal instead of the deal with you and can the same thing apply to you also?’ I replied, ‘Yes, - that can happen.’ He (the Imam) said, Tt then is lawful.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you enter your market-place you should say this, ‘O Allah, I pray to You to grant me of its (market-place) good things and its good people. I seek protection with You against its evil and the evil of its people. O Allah, I seek protection with You against my own injustice and injustice done to me, against my own transgression and the transgression committed against me, against my own excess and excess acts against me. O Allah, I seek protection with You against the evil of Satan and his armies, against the criminal ones of Arab and none-Arab people. Allah is sufficient for me. No one, except Allah, deserves worship. I entrust Him with my affairs and He is the Lord of the great Throne . 555

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you decide to buy something say this, “O Living, O Guardian, O Eternal, O Compassionate, O Merciful I pray to You through Your majesty, Your power and all that Your knowledge encompasses, grant me of business the greatest share of sustenance, vastest extra favors and the best of consequences; there is no goodness in that which is void of good consequences.’” He (the narrator) has said that abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘When you buy an animal or a head (living thing) say this, “O Allah, make it to live the longest, benefit the most and of the best consequences.’””
