“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Do not eat with your left hand if you can.’”

Al-Ays ibn al-Qasim asked Imam Sadiq (a.s) how to greet the people of the Book when writing a letter. He said: “Write: “And Peace to all who follow guidance” [The Holy Quran: Ta- Ha 20:47] in the beginning, and write: “And Peace on the apostles. And Praise to God, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds” [The Holy Quran: Saffat 37:181-182] at the end of the letter.”

“You write: Greetings to one who follows guidance. And end your letter with: Greetings to the Apostles, and praise is due to the Lord of the two worlds.”

“The younger ones offer greetings of peace to the elders, passing by those who are stationary and fewer people to those of a greater number.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that he dislikes for a man to eat with his left hand or drink with it and take something with it.”’

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Dinner of the Prophets is after al-’Atmah (the time of late evening Salat (prayer)); so you must not ignore dinner because ignoring it leads to neglecting the body.”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is Makruh (undesirable) for a creditor to lodge with his debtor, even if he has already picked the amount he owes and has made it ready to pay, except for three days.’”

One bed is for the man of the house. A second bed is for the woman of the house. A third bed is for house guests. Any extra beds would be for Satan.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Eat what falls off of food, because in it is cure for all kinds of illness by the permission of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, for those who seek cures.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘When one of you sits for food, he must sit like slaves and must not place one leg over the other or sit in a cross-legged manner; it is the kind of sitting for which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, hates and abhors one who sits in such manner.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Leave the hot (food) until it becomes cold. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once was given hot food and he (the Messenger of Allah) said, “Leave it until it becomes cold. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is not the one to feed us fire; the blessing is in the cold.’””

“If one sneezes, places his hand over his nose and says, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, (all praise belongs to Allah), a great deal of praise, as He deserves, Allah has granted al-Salat (favors) and peace upon Muhammad, His Holy Prophet, and the Ahl al-Bay (family of Muhammad), a small flying thing, smaller than a grasshopper and larger than a fly, will come out of his left nostril until it reaches beneath the Throne and asks for him forgiveness from Allah to the Day of Judgment.’”

The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Islam is bare. Its dress is modesty, its ornament is dignity, its good deed is chivalry, and its support is piety. Everything has a foundation, and the foundation of Islam is loving us, the Ahl al-Bayt.

a man invited Ali ibn AbiTalib (s) to his house. The Imam (s) accepted upon the fulfillment of three conditions. The man said, ‘O Commander of the Faithful! What are they?’ The Imam (s) said, ‘They are that you bring nothing for me from the outside; that you do not deny me of anything that is in the house; and that you do not burden your wife on my behalf.’ The man said, ‘Fine.’ Ali ibn Abi Talib (s) accepted his invitation.

Wait.’ We waited. He asked, ‘Is there with any of you some apple, pears, peaches or a measure of perfumes or fragrance like ‘Ud or bakhur?’ We replied, ‘We do not have any such things with us.’ The Imam then said, ‘You should know that a patient feels relieved when something is presented to him.’”

al-Hasan b. Ali (AS) said: "There are twelve characteristics regarding sitting at a dining-table which each Muslim should learn. Four of them are obligatory, four are recommendable, and four are good manners. The four obligatory characters are knowing what to eat; pronouncing the name of God (by saying ‘Bismillah’); gratitude; and contentment. The four recommendable characteristics washing before you eat; sitting on the left leg ; eating with three fingers; and sucking the fingers. The four characteristics that are good manners are eating only from what is placed before you; taking small bites of food to eat; chewing the food thoroughly; and avoiding looking at other people’s faces.”

“You should not greet the Jews; the Christians; the Magians ; the idol-worshippers; those sitting at a table on which wine is served; chess players; backgammon players; the effeminates ; poets who accuse chaste women of adultery; those busy praying since they cannot greet you back as greeting is recommendable while greeting back is obligatory; those who devour usury; those who are in the toilet; those who are in the bathroom; and those who are corrupt in the publics eyes.”
