I said to Jamil: what about the wife? He said: it has been narrated from Anbasa from Abi Abdillah عليه السلام that he said: if he (the husband) clothes her with what covers her Awra [what should be covered] and if he feeds her what keeps her back straight then she remains with him otherwise he divorces her.

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said, ‘A man is not compelled, but for providing the expenses of his parents and children.’ He (the narrator) has said that Ibn Abi ‘Umayr has said, ‘I asked Jamil about the woman and he said that ‘Anbasah has narrated from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), who has said that if one provides clothes for her which is sufficient to maintain her dignity, sufficient food to survive, she then must stay with him, otherwise, she is divorced.’”

I asked Abu Abdullah (as) about a man who had three wives and then married two more women in a single contract. He consummated the marriage with one of them and then died. Imam (as) said: "If he consummated the marriage with the woman whose name was mentioned first during the marriage contract, then his marriage is valid, and she must observe the waiting period ('iddah), and she is entitled to inheritance. However, if he consummated the marriage with the woman whose name was mentioned after the first woman, then his marriage is invalid, she is not entitled to inheritance, but she must observe the waiting period ('iddah).

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, in his letter to al- Hassan (a.s.) : ‘You must never consult women because their opinion is weak in reason and their aim is not durable. They must keep their eye cast down by means of your barrier, because strict privacy is better for you and for them and away from doubts. Their going out is not more difficult than entering of one to their place whom you do not trust about them. If you can, do something that no man other than you can know them; then do so.’” Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Sa‘id from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Husayniy from Ali ibn ‘Abdakin from al-Hassan ibn Tarif ibn Nasih from al-Husayn ibn ‘Ulwan from Sa‘d ibn Tarif from al- Asbagh ibn Nubatah from ‘Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), a similar Hadith except that he has said ‘Amir al-Mu’minin wrote it to his son Muhammad (bin al-Hanafiyah).

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that it is in the letter of ’Amir al-Mu 5 minin to al-Hassan (a.s.), which says, ‘You must not give control of things beyond her own affairs to a woman; it is easier for her condition, comfortable for her mind and helps her beauty to last longer, because women are like sweet basil and not a wrestling champion and she must not allow her soul to bypass her grace and honor. Help her to cast down her eyes by your covering, withhold her with your veil, and not to incite her to intercede for others before you so that the recommended incline toward her and go before yourself for the rest. Your restraining yourself from women when they see you dominant is better than their seeing you in a condition of breaking apart. 5 ” Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘id has narrated from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Hassaniy from Ali ibn ‘Abdaka from al-Hassan ibn Zarif ibn Nasih from al-Husayn ibn ‘Ulwan from Sa‘d ibn Tarif from al- Asbagh ibn Nubatah from ‘Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has narrated a similar Hadith except that he has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), wrote the letter to his son Muhammad, may Allah be pleased with him.
