Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: Ḥusain (a.s.) said, “I am the Martyr of Tears.”

"Ghādiriyyah is the land on which Allāh spoke to Mūsā ibn ‘Imrān (a.s.) and He confided in Nūḥ (a.s.). It is the most honourable land with Allāh and if it was not so, Allāh would not have entrusted (the bodies of) His Divine Authorities and His prophets to it. Therefore, you should go to the Ziyārah of our graves in Ghāďiriyyah."

Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) said, “I am the Martyr of Tears. No believer remembers me without crying.”

Mound’ refers to Najaf of Kūfah and ‘spring’ refers to the Euphrates (River).”

Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) said: The heavens never wept over anyone after Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā (a.s.) until Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) was killed. And when he (Ḥusain (a.s.)) was killed, the heavens wept over him for forty days.

The heavens never wept over anyone after the killing of Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā (a.s.) until Ḥusain (a.s.) was killed. And when he was killed, the heavens wept over him (also).”

Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) was asked, “Who stopped Fir’awn from killing Mūsā (a.s.) which is referred to in this verse, ‘Fir’awn said, ‘Let me kill Mūsā’ (40:26)?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “(Fir’awn could not kill Mūsā (a.s.)) because he was conceived legitimately. Verily the prophets and the Decisive Proofs are only killed by those who are conceived illegitimately and by the children of adulteresses.” The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chain: My father and all of my scholars, from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn Abī Khalaf, from Muḥammad ibn Ḥusain, from ‘Ali ibn Asbāť, from Ismā’īl ibn Abī Ziyād, from some of his scholars, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.). My father narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Ibrāhīm ibn Hāshim, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from some of his companions, from Ibn Muskān, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: The killer of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) was conceived illegitimately.

Allah created one hundred and twenty-four thousand prophets, and I am the best of them with Allah and I do not boast. Allah created one hundred and twenty-four thousand deputies, and `Ali is the best of them and the most preferred of them with Allah. The shaykh said: Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Baghdadi al-Warraq narrated this hadith to me – he said: `Ali b. Muhammad the servant of al-Rashid narrated to us. He said Darim b. Qubaysa narrated to me. He said: `Abdullah b. Muhammad b. Sulayman b. `Abdullah b. al-Hasan narrated to me from his father from his grandfather from Zayd b. `Ali from his father `Ali b. al-Husayn from his father from Amir al-Mu’minin `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) from the Prophet (s).

I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) say: The heavens wept over Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) and Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā (a.s.) and they have never wept over anyone other than them. I asked, “How did the heavens weep?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “The heavens became red for forty days like the sun at the time of sunrise and sunset.” I asked, “Is that how the heavens weep?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Yes.”

I heard Ka`b al Ahbar say: It is in our book that a man from the offspring of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (s) will be killed and the sweat of the riding animals of his companions shall not dry until they have entered Paradise and been embraced by the dark-eyed beauties. Then al-Hasan (as) passed by us and we said: Is he this [one]? He said: No. Then al-Husayn (as) passed by us and we said: Is he this [one]? He said: Yes.

Al-Husayn (as) was killed while he had three hundred and twenty-something wounds from spears, sword slashes, and arrows. It is reported that these were all on his front side because he (as) did not turn around.

Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: Four thousand angels descended (on the Day of ‘Āshūrā) to fight along with Ḥusain (a.s.) but they were not permitted to fight. Therefore, they ascended back (to the heavens) to seek permission (from Allāh). However, by the time they came back, Ḥusain (a.s.) had been killed. Therefore, they remain next to his grave, disheveled and covered with dust, and they cry over him (and will continue to do so) until the Day of Judgment. Their chief is an angel named Mansūr. These angels receive everyone who comes to the Ziyārah of Ḥusain (a.s.) and they accompany them when they bid farewell to Ḥusain (a.s.). They visit them if they become ill, establish prayers on them in their funerals when they die, and seek forgiveness for them after their death. All of these angels are on earth waiting for the rising of the Qā`im (a.s.).

Whoever shuns striving for his needs on the day of `Ashura’, Allah will meet his needs of this world and the Hereafter. Whoever spends the day of `Ashura’ as a day of his adversity and his grief and his lamentation, Allah will make the Day of Resurrection as a day of his happiness and his delight, and his eye shall be cooled due to us in the Gardens. But, whoever calls the day of `Ashura’ as a day of blessing and stores anything in his lodging on it, whatever he has stored on that day will not be blessed; and on the Day of Resurrection, he will be gathered with Yazid, `Ubaydullah b. Ziyad, and `Umar b. Sa`d (la) in the lowermost of the lowest pit of the Fire.

The crowd came into our pavilion. I was a young girl, and I had gold anklets on my feet. A man rushed to take the anklets from my feet whilst he was weeping. So, I said: “What makes you cry, O enemy of Allah?!” So, he said: “How can I not weep when I am robbing the daughter of the Messenger of Allah?!” So, I said: “Do not rob me.” He said: “I fear someone else may take it.” She said: They took everything in the buildings to the point where they even took the cloaks off our backs.

I was near Abu `Abdillah (as) when he sought water. When he had drunk it, I saw that he had been crying and his eyes had been filled to the brim with his tears. Then he said: O Dawud! May Allah curse the murderer of al-Husayn. The remembrance of al-Husayn has made life loathsome! I do not drink cold water but that I remember al-Husayn. And there is not a servant who drinks water and remembers al-Husayn (as) and curses his murderer, but that Allah writes down for him a hundred thousand good deeds and erases a hundred thousand evil deeds from him and raises him by a hundred thousand ranks. He is as if he has freed a hundred thousand lives and Allah will gather him on the Day of Resurrection with a luminous face.

What’s the matter with you? She said: My son, al-Husayn (as) has been killed and I haven’t seen the Messenger of Allah (s) since he died save this night. So, I said: May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you! Why is it that I see you so looking so haggard and pale? He said: I have been digging the grave of al-Husayn and the graves of his companions since this night.

I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “What do you say about (the reward for) the Ziyārah of the grave of Abī ‘Abdillāh Al-Ḥusain (a.s.)? Some people have informed us that it is equal to one Hajj and one ‘Umrah.” Imam (a.s.) replied: Do not be surprised by all of these rewards. Rather, go to his Ziyārah and do not abandon him, for verily he is the Master of the Martyrs and he is the Master of the Youth of Paradise. Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā (a.s.) is similar to Ḥusain (a.s.) and the heavens and the earth wept (only) over the two of them. The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chains: A) My father, and Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan ibn Walīd, both from Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan Al-Saffār, from ‘Abdil Samad ibn Muḥammad, from Ḥanān ibn Sadīr, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.). B) My father, and all of my scholars, from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Muḥammad ibn Ismā’īl ibn Bazī’, from Ḥanān ibn Sadīr, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.).

I asked Abil Hassan (s) about the reward of praying for one who is hung? The Imam (s) said, Don’t you know that my grandfather (s) prayed for his uncle (Zayd)? I said, I know this, but cannot clearly understand how. The Imam (s) said, I will explain it to you. If the face of the hanged person is towards the Qibla, you should stand on the side of his right shoulder. If his back is towards the Qibla you should stand on the side of his left shoulder. Whichever way he is facing, you should not stand away from his shoulders. Your face should be in between the East and the West. You should neither face him, nor should you have him at your back.” Abu Hashem added, “Then Al-Ridha (s) said, God willing, you understood!”The author of this book (Sheikh Sadooq) - may God have Mercy upon him - said, “This is a strange tradition which I have not found anywhere else. I have not found any other narrations of this tradition.”

I heard al-Sadiq Abu `Abdillah (as) say: When al-Husayn b. `Ali (as) was born, Allah ordered Jibra’il that he descend with a thousand angels and offer congratulations to the Messenger of Allah (s) from Allah and from Jibra’il. He said: So Jibra’il descended and he passed by an island in the sea wherein was an angel, named Futrus, who was from the bearers (of the Throne). Allah had dispatched him for something and he had delayed it. So, He broke his wings and banished him to that island. He worshipped Allah therein for seven hundred years until al-Husayn b. `Ali (as) was born. The angel said to Jibra’il: O Jibra’il! Where do you intend (i.e. to go)? He said: Allah has bestowed a bounty on Muhammad. So, I have been sent to offer him congratulations from Allah and myself. He said: O Jibra’il! Carry me with you; perhaps Muhammad (s) will pray for me. He said: So, he carried him. He said: When Jibra’il entered the Prophet’s presence, he conveyed to him the congratulations from Allah and himself and informed him about the state of Futrus. The Prophet (s) said: Say to him: Rub (yourself) against this newborn and revert to your abode. He said: So Futrus rubbed (himself) against al-Husayn b. `Ali (as) and he ascended. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Your Nation will certainly kill him soon, and upon me is the remuneration for him. A visitor shall not visit him but that I will notify him and a Muslim shall not send his salutation upon him but that I will convey to him his salaam. A praying one shall not say a prayer (benediction of Allah) upon him but that I will convey to him his prayer. Then he ascended.

The neighbours of Umm Ayman came to the Messenger of Allah (s) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Umm Ayman did not sleep yesterday from weeping, and she did not stop weeping until the morning. He said: So, the Messenger of Allah (s) called for Umm Ayman and she came. So, he said to her: O Umm Ayman! Allah did not cause your eyes to weep. Surely, your neighbours came to me and informed me that you did not stop weeping for the whole night. Allah did not cause your eyes to weep, so what has caused you to weep? She said: O Messenger of Allah! I saw a very harsh dream, so, I could not stop weeping for the whole night. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) said to her: Describe it to the Messenger of Allah, for surely, Allah and His Messenger know best. So, she said: It has overwhelmed me too much to speak about it. So, he said to her: The dream is not what you think you saw, so describe it to the Messenger of Allah (s). She said: I saw this during the night: it was as though one of your limbs was lying in my house. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) said to her: May your eyes sleep, O Umm Ayman. Fatima will give birth to al-Husayn, and she will raise him. He will be one of my limbs in your house. So, when Fatima gave birth to al-Husayn (as), on the seventh day, the Messenger of Allah (s) ordered that his head be shaved, and that the weight of his hair be donated in silver. Then, he performed his `aqiqa. Then, Umm Ayman came to him, wrapped him, and presented him to the Messenger of Allah (s). So, he (s) said: Welcome to the carrier and the one being carried. O Umm Ayman, this is the interpretation of your dream.
