“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about fasting in a connected manner. He (the Imam) said, ‘We still dislike it.’”

Woman experiencing Hayd (menses) must compensatory prayer fasting but not for Salah (prayer).’”

“It is not harmful for a male or female cook to taste the broth while they are fasting.”

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), fasting is difficult for me. He (the Imam) said, ‘One dirham given as charity is better than fasting for one day. He (the Imam) then said, ‘I do not like if you neglect it.’”

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about the case of one of my friends who has come to al- ’A‘was in the month of Ramadan; if I can go to meet him and stop fasting. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, you can do so.’ I then asked, ‘Should I go to meet him and stop fasting or stay home and fast?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You should go to meet him and stop fasting.’”

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said, ‘Islam is based on five principles. It is based on Prayer, Charity (al-Zakat) Fasting, Hajj and al-Wilayah (Divine Authority of A ’immah). The call to none of the other principles has been so emphatic as it has been to al-Wilayah.’”

“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has made five things obligatory upon His creatures. He has given them permission in four but in one of them He has not given permission.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who dies and owes fast of the month of Ramadan and about who is responsible to complete its Qada’ (compensatory fast) on his behalf. He (the Imam) said, ‘The one who has the greatest degree of priority in the matter about him completes Qada’ (compensatory fast) on his behalf.’ I then asked, ‘Can such person be a woman?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, such person can only be from men.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith: ‘If a man fasts certain days of the month of Ramadan during his illness then dies, he is not obligated for anything. However, if he becomes well, then becomes ill then dies and leaves behind a certain amount of asset, for every day, one mud of food must be given on his behalf, and if he has not left behind any assets, his guardian must fast on his behalf.’”

“I once said to abu Ja‘far (a.s.), that al-Mughirah ibn Sa‘id has narrated from you that you have said, ‘A woman is required to perform Qada’ (compensatory prayer) of Salah (prayer) she has missed when experiencing Hayd (menses). He (the Imam) said, ‘What has happened to him, may Allah not accord him. The wife of ‘Imran made a vow about what was in her belly to be dedicated. What is dedicated to Masjid enters it then does not come out whereof forever. When she gave birth she said, ‘My Cherisher, I have given birth to a female. . . . and male is not like a female.’ When she gave birth she entered the Masjid, prophets cooperated with her and the raffle came out in the name of Zakariya’ who took charge of her upbringing. She did not come out of the Masjid until she was an adult. When she became what women become, she moved out. Was she able to perform Qada’ (compensatory prayer) of the days of Salah (prayer) she was out of the Masjid while she must have remained in the Masjid forever?”’ (The terms of dedication may not allow her to perform the form of Salah (prayer) Qada’ (compensatory prayer) required from her).

“I heard abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘The Messenger of Allah continued fasting for such a long time that people thought he would not discontinue it. He then discontinued fasting for such a long time that people thought he would not fast. Then he began fasting as Dawud (a.s.), did. One day he would fast and not fast the next day. He left this world with a practice of fasting three days every month. The Imam said, ‘Fasting three days every month is like fasting a whole month. This removes wahr from one’s chest. Wahr means temptation.’ Hammad has said, ‘I then asked, which days are they?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Every first Thursday, every first Wednesday after the tenth of the month and the last Thursday therein.’ I then asked, ‘How did these days become as such?’ He replied, ‘The days when torment descended on the people of the past were one of these days. Because of fear, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would fast during these days.’”
