محمد بن معروف أخو عمر: ابن معروف. قال الوحيد: روى عنه محمد بن أحمد بن يحيى، ولم يستثن روايته. (إنتهى). أقول: أشار بذلك إلى اعتبار الرجل، فإن ابن الوليد استثنى من روايات محمد بن أحمد بن يحيى روايته، عن جماعة، وليس فيهم محمد بن معروف، وذلك يكشف عن اعتماد ابن الوليد عليه، ولكنا لم نظفر بما ذكره - قدس سره -، وعلى تقدير الصحة، فهو لا يدل على الوثاقة، على ما ذكرناه غير مرة.
