محمد بن حكيم الساباطي

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once mentioned eggs and said, ‘It is light and it reduces the desire for meat.’ “He (the narrator) has said, ‘Muhammad ibn Tsma‘il ibn Bazi‘ has narrated from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn Hakim from Murazim with an addition of, ‘it does not have the harmfulness of meat.”

Everything in this book that is narrated from Muhammad ibn Hakim has been transmitted by me from my father - may Allah (swt) have mercy on him - from Abdullah ibn Jafar Al-Himyari, from Ahmad ibn Abi Abdullah, from his father, from Hammad ibn Isa, from Hariz, from Muhammad ibn Hakim. I have also narrated it from Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan - may Allah (swt) have mercy on him - from Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan Al-Saffar, from Yaqub ibn Yazid, from Muhammad ibn Abi Umayr, from Muhammad ibn Hakim.

he said: "If a man were to die while fasting during travel, I would not perform the funeral prayer for him."

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that hot food is devoid of blessings.’”

the names of those who engaged in Kalam (speculative theology) were mentioned to Abi al-Hasan عليه السلام – so he said: as for Ibn Hukaym then leave him be.

“If a group of people enter a town and ask the people if they can stay there and the people turn them down, but they think the residents agreed with their stay and they stay there, they are secure.”

I heard Abu Ja'far Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) say regarding a woman who has reached menopause and her husband divorces her: "She is separated from him, and there is no waiting period ('iddah) upon her."

"If the father and the grandfather both arrange the marriage, the marriage arranged by the first one will take precedence. However, if both arranged the marriage simultaneously, then the grandfather has greater authority."

“I once heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), say, ‘If you perform two Salah (prayer), one after the other, do not perform optional Salah (prayer) between them.”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The body is made out of bread (food).”’

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘If a man while on a journey and fasting dies, I will not perform Salat (prayer) (of dead people) for him.’”

“Abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal (a.s.), has said, ‘Feed one who is suffering from fever with the meat of al-Qabaj (a kind of partridge) because it strengthens the legs and dispels fever completely.’”

I asked Abu 'Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as): "Who is responsible for granting ma'rifa (a profound understanding of religion)?" He said: "It is the doing of Allah, and the servants have no role in it (without the intervention of Allah)."

I asked him about a young girl who does not menstruate, though others like her do menstruate, and her husband divorces her. Imam (as) said: "Her waiting period is three months."

“I mentioned to abu al-Hassan al-Awwal (the first) (a.s.), the statements of Hisham al-Jawaliqi and what he says about fully grown up young man (see Hadith 3 Chapter on prohibited Attributes). I also mentioned the statements of Hisham ibn al-Hakam in this matter.” The Imam said, “Allah, certainly, is not similar to any thing.”

“Imam abu al-Hassan Musa ibn Ja‘far (a.s.) wrote to my father, ‘Allah is far High, Glorious and Great than that one can reach the essence of His attribute. Speak of only those of His attributes of which He Himself has spoken and refrain from attributes other than those ones.’”

“I once asked the virtuous servant of Allah about the case of a young girl who does not experience Hayd (menses) when girls like her become pregnant and her husband has divorced her. He (the Imam) said, ’Her waiting period is three months.’”

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘A woman the like of whom cannot become pregnant does not need to count a waiting period.’”

“Muhammad ibn Hakim narrated to me that he had heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), say, ‘Performing two Salah (prayer) soon one after the other is when no optional Salah (prayer) is performed between them. When optional Salah (prayer) is performed between them, they are not performed soon one after the other.’”

I said to Abi al-Hasan Musa عليه السلام – may I be made your ransom, we have gained understanding of the religion and Allah has made us self-sufficient from needing the people, so much so that a group of us may be in a meeting – not a man asks his fellow a question which comes to his mind except that he receives an answer for it, this is from the mercy of Allah on us through you, however it may happen that something is referred to us about which we have received nothing on your authority or that of your forefathers, can we look for the best-match in what we have and the closest to that which has come down to us from you and take it [as the answer]? So he said: not at all, not at all, in doing that – by Allah – were destroyed those who were destroyed O Ibn Hukaym, then he said: may Allah curse Aba Hanifa he used to say “Ali said but I say …”, Muhammad b. Hukaym then reported to Hisham b. al-Hakam that: by Allah I did not want anything [in asking this] except that he permit Qiyas (analogical reasoning) for me.
