“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’Eating clay is of the sources of hypocrisy.”’

“Of the people suffering most severely on the Day of Judgment will be one who preaches justice but acts otherwise.”

“Whoever meets the Muslims with two faces and tongues, he on the Day of Judgment will be raised with two tongues of fire.”

beware of argumentation in the religion for it diverts the heart from the remembrance of Allāh Mighty and Majestic, leads to hypocrisy, brings about rancour and justifies borrowing lies (to win).

“The worst servant (of Allah) is a servant who has two faces and tongues. He praises his brother (in belief) on his face and backbites him in his absence. If his brother (in belief) gains something, he envies him, and if he faces difficult conditions, he betrays him.”

I heard Abu Al-Hassan (asws) saying regarding the Statement of Allah (azwj) Blessed and High: “[4:108] They seek to hide from men and seek not to hide from Allah. He is with them when by night they hold discourse displeasing unto Him”, he (asws) said: ‘It means so and so and so and so (Abu Bakr and Umar), and Abu Ubeyda Bin Al-Jarrah’.

“I admonish you against two characteristics which can ruin men: to worship God with a wrong religion, and to advise people on issues you are uninformed about.”

“Once abu Ja’far (a.s.) said to me, ‘Convey to our Shi’a (followers) that what is with Allah is not achievable by any other means but by good deeds. Convey to our Shi’a (followers) that of the people who, on the Day of Judgment, will regret the most is the one who preaches justice but does not yield to justice in favor of the others.’”

I admonish you against two characteristics which can ruin men: to worship God with a wrong religion, and to advise people on issues you are uninformed about.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘A servant (of Allah) is closest to disbelief when he assumes brotherhood (in belief) with a man and then begins to count his mistakes and slips so he can one day use them against him.’”

I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) say: Abu Ja`far al-Baqir (as) said: Whoever’s appearances are weightier [in deeds] than his inside, his Scale [of good deeds] will be lightened.

Beware of arguing in religion, for it distracts the heart from the remembrance of Allah, it bequeaths hypocrisy, it forms grudges, and it makes lying easy.

“Allah, the Most Blessed, the Most High, said to Jesus, son of Mary (a.s.), ‘O Jesus, your tongue must be one tongue in private and in public so also must be your heart. I warn you against your own soul and Myself am a sufficient expert over your (activities). Two tongues are not proper for one mouth just as two swords are not proper in one sheath or two hearts in one chest, and so also are minds.’”

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘The case of a hypocrite is like the trunk of a palm tree. His owner wants to use it in a construction but it does not fit where he wants it to fit. He then tries it in another place and it still does not fit. At last he burns it in the fire.’”

"When a servant of Allah befriends someone, under the pretense of religion, with a motive to find out his drawbacks and errors, so that he would then taunt that man, he draws himself closest to becoming an infidel."

I asked Abu Abdillah, peace be upon him, about the saying of Allah, Exalted and Glorious is He: «Indeed, We presented the trust upon the Heavens, the earth and the mountains, but they refused to carry it and feared it, and it was carried by the human being. He is, indeed, wrong-doing, ignorant.» (33:72) He said: The trust is the Divine Authority, and the human being is the one of evils, the hypocrite.

The Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, said: "Two traits never go together in a hypocrite: the (true) learning about Islam, and the distinct feature (of nobility) in the face." May Allah bless our master Muhammad and his progeny.

‘I heard Abu Abdullah (asws) saying: ‘There is a group in the Masjid who publicise us (asws) and publicise themselves. They are neither from us (asws) nor are we (asws) from them. I (asws) rush away and hide, but they still uncover my (asws) veil. May Allah (azwj) violate their veil. They are saying that I (asws) am the Imam (asws), but, by Allah (azwj), I (asws) am not an Imam (asws) except for the one who obeys me (asws). So as for the one who disobeys me (asws), I (asws) am not an Imam (asws) for him. Why are they attaching themselves to my (asws) name, and not refraining from mentioning my (asws) name from their mouths? By Allah (azwj), may He (azwj) not Gather me (asws) and them in one abode’.

“O my son! There are signs for everything by which they are known and which indicate those things. There are three signs for religion which are knowledge, faith and acting accordingly. There are three signs for knowledge which are knowledge of God, knowledge of what God likes and what God disapproves of. There are three signs for faith which are faith in God, His Book and His Messenger. There are also three signs for acting accordingly which are praying, fasting and paying the alms-tax. There are three signs for one who is a show-off which are quarrelling with ones who are better; speaking out of ignorance; and seeking what is extremely hard to find. There are three signs for the oppressor which are oppressively harming those who are superior; being forceful with those who are inferior; and helping those who are oppressors. There are three signs for the corrupt which are constant disagreement between what he says and what is in his heart; constant disagreement between his heart and his deeds; and constant disagreement between his outward appearance and his inward thoughts. There are three signs for the sinner which are he is treacherous, he lies and he acts opposite to what he says. There are three signs for the show-off which are he is lazy, but he acts as if he is steadfast in public and he always seeks to be praised.There are three signs for the haughty which are he blames others in their absence; he boastfully praises others in front of them; and he blames the events which bring about calamities. There are three signs for the wasteful which are he buys what he doesn’t deserve to have; he wears what he doesn’t deserve to wear; and he eats what he doesn’t deserve to eat. There are three signs for the lazy which are he is so sluggish that he starts to commit criminal acts; he has shortcomings that lead him to being ungrateful; and he wastes things so much that he becomes a criminal. There are three signs for the ignorant which are inattentiveness, playfulness and forgetfulness.” Hammad ibn Isa added that Aba Abdullah as-Sadiq (MGB) said, “For each of these signs there are more than a thousand indications. O Himad! Seek knowledge during the day and the night. Stop being greedy for what others possess, if you wish to be able to see the good in this world and attain the Eternal Abode. Consider yourself to be amongst the dead. Do not consider yourself to be superior to anyone else. Keep your mouth shut and keep your aspirations to yourself.”

Some of the companions of Abu Abdullah (asws) has reported that Abu Abdullah (asws) came out to us and he (asws) was ‘مُغْضَبٌ’ angry. He (asws) said: ‘I (asws) went out for some need, so some black people of Al-Medina presented themselves to me (asws). They shouted at me (asws) as: ‘لَبَّيْكَ يَا جَعْفَرَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ لَبَّيْكَ’ ‘Here I am (Labbaik) O Ja’far Bin Muhammad (asws), here I am (Labbaik)!’ So I (asws) returned back to my (asws) house, in a fearful panic from what they had said, until I (asws) prostrated to my (asws) Lord (azwj) and rubbed my (asws) face to Him (azwj), and humbled myself (asws) to Him (azwj), and distanced myself (asws) (from them) to Him (azwj) from what they had shouted to me (asws). And if Isa (as) Ibn Maryam (as) had added anything to what Allah (azwj) had Said regarding him (as), then he (as) would have become deaf and would not have been able to hear anything after that ever, and become blinded and would not have been able to visualise anything after that ever, and would have become dumb and would not have been able to speak anything after that ever’. Then he (asws) said: ‘May Allah (azwj) Curse Abu Al-Khattaab and kill him with the iron’.
