“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whoever comforts the poor with his property and yields to justice for people against his own soul indeed is a believer.”

“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) say, ‘The Messenger of Allah has said, “If one can realize the effect of his words on his deeds, his words will decrease except for what he needs.’”

“Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘If you hear someone reciting poems in Masjid say to him, “May Allah tear your mouth, Masjid is built only for al-Quran (to read).””’

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about clay. He (the Imam) said, ‘ It is unlawful like dead animals, blood, flesh of pigs except the clay from the grave of al-Husayn (a.s.), in which there is cure for all kinds of illness and security from all kinds of fear.”’

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whoever receives his Muslim brother (in belief) with honor and value and relieves his suffering continues living under the extended shadow of Allah with blessings as long as he is in there.’”

“I once said to abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), ‘My family eats the meat of goats but not that of sheep.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Why they do so?’ I replied, ‘They say that it excites bitterness (stomach acid).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Had Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, known anything better than sheep He would have presented it as ransom for Ishaq.’” This is how it has come in Hadith.

The Messenger of Allah (s.w) said: “Beware of arguing wit every maniac. Verily, every maniac dictates his proof till the end of his time (death). When his life cameos to an end, his mischief will cause him to burn in the fire.” It is also transmitted, `his mistakes trouble him and burn him.’

“I heard Abā ʿAbdillāh (a) say, ‘One who knows the appropriate position of his speech in relation to his intellect reduces his speech about that which does not concern him.’ And Abū ʿAbdillāh (a) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ṣ) said, ‘Beware of arguing with a deluded individual, for indeed every deluded individual has an argument that lasts only until his time comes to an end, and when his time is up, his delusion burns him with the Fire.’” [1]

I wrote to Abu’l-Hasan, peace be upon him, on the hands of my father: May I be sacrificed for you, our companions have disputed with regards to (the measurement of) a ssaa’. Some of them say that (the alms tax of) the Fitra is (given by the amount of) a ssaa’ of Medina, and some of them say the ssaa’ of Iraq. Then he wrote to me: A ssaa’ is (consisting of) six pounds by the Medinian standard, and nine pounds by the Iraqi standard. He said: He also informed me and said: In measurement, it is one thousand and one hundred and seventy measures.

“I once wrote to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), through my father asking, ‘May I be sacrificed for you, our people have differences about al-Sa’. Some of them say that al-Fitra is by al-Sa‘ al-Madaniy and others say it is by al-Sa‘ al-‘Iraqiy. He (the Imam) wrote back to me: ‘Al-Sa‘ is six Artal by al-Madaniy, and nine Artal by al-‘Iraqiy.’ He (the Imam) informed me that it weighs one thousand one hundred seventy Waznah (a certain unit of measurement).”’

“Whoever provides a poor Muslim with clothes for covering and assists him in means of his living, Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, as a reward assigns seven thousand angels to pray and ask forgiveness for him up to the time of sounding off of the trumpet (Day of Judgment) for every sin that he may have committed.”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘Is receiving charity lawful for the children of al- Hashim?’ He replied, ‘What is not lawful for us to receive of the people’s charity is obligatory charity. One is harmless when receiving charities other than obligatory. Had it been otherwise, they could not even go to Makkah; these waters are all charities.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once the case of a man on whose body there was a wound and had experienced sexual relation was mentioned before the Holy prophet and that they compelled him to take Ghusl (bath). It shriveled him with complications, which caused his death. The Messenger of Allah said, ‘They killed him, may Allah cause them to die. Only asking is medicine for ignorance.’”

‘The Messenger (saww) of Allah (azwj) said: ‘The status of the man is (in accordance to) his Religion, and his chivalry, and his intellect, and his nobility, and his beauty, and his generosity, and his piety.

“Once, the beauty of peacock was mentioned before abu al-Hassan (a.s.), who said, ‘It cannot have any greater beauty over the white rooster.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I heard him (the Imam) saying, ‘The voice of rooster is better than the voice of peacock. It is of greater blessing because it wakes you up for the time of Salat (prayer). The peacock says, ‘Woe is me.’ It says so because of the mistake that it fell in.’”

"I wrote to Abu Al-Hasan (as) through Abu (a messenger), saying: 'May I be your ransom, our companions have differed regarding the measure of the sa': some say Zakat al-Fitr is based on the Madani sa', while others say it is based on the Iraqi sa'.' Imam (as) wrote back to me: 'The sa' is six ritls (weights) by the Madani measure and nine ritls by the Iraqi measure.' Imam (as) further informed me: 'By weight, it is 1,170 weights (units).'"

Whoever is sympathetic with the poor and treats the people fairly is a true believer.”

“I heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘If one maintains a horse of pure breed, three of his sins will be deleted every day and ten good deeds will be written in his favor. If one maintains a horse of mixed breed, two of his bad deeds will be deleted every day and seven good deeds will be written in his favor. If one maintains a mule for beauty or for his needs or use in his defense against the enemy, one of his sins will be deleted every day and six good deeds will be written in his favor.’”

“I once said to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), ‘I eat saltwort.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), when washing his hands and mouth (with saltwort) would keep his lips closed. There is a quality in it, which is disliked. It can cause tuberculoses, it takes away the water of the back and weakens the knees.’ I then asked about clay. He (the Imam) said, ‘Eating clay is unlawful like dead bodies, blood and pork except the clay and soil of the grave of al-Husayn (a.s.), in which there is cure for all illnesses, however, do not be excessive, and there is immunity in it against all kinds of fear.’”

“The prayers of four kinds of people are not heard: a man who sits home and says, ‘O Lord, grant me sustenance,’ and it is said to him, “Have I not commanded you to work?” a man who is troubled by his wife so he prays for relief, but he will be asked, ‘Have 1 not made dissolving marriage lawful?’ A man who has destroyed his wealth and asks, ‘O Lord, grant me wealth,’ he will be asked, “Have I not commanded you to spend it moderately and have I not commanded you to make corrections?” Then the Imam read from the Holy Quran, ‘. . . who in their spending are neither extravagant nor stingy but maintain moderation,’ (25:67) and a man who lends money to others without witnesses as evidence and it is said to him, ‘Have I not commanded you to ask for witnesses as testimony?”’ Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Umar ibn abu ‘Asim from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) a similar Hadith.
