“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about the exchange of grape with raisins and he (the Imam) replied, ‘It is not permissible unless it is in equal measures.’ I asked about exchange of dates and raisins. He (the Imam) said, ‘It must be in equal measures.’”

There are many types of ill-gotten properties. They include: what is earned by oppressive rulers including what judges earn and what prostitutes earn; money earned from wine; intoxicating drinks; usury after it was disallowed. O Am’mar (ibn Marvan)! You should know that taking a bribe for judgement is equal to atheism and denying God’s Prophet (MGB).”

I asked Abu Abdillah, peace be upon him, about booty theft, so he said: Everything that has been taken from the Imam is illegal possession; consuming the property of an orphan is illegal possession. Illegal possession is of many types, among which is what is acquired through the actions of oppressive governors; and among which are the rewards of judges; the rewards of fornicators; the price of grape wine, non-grape wine and intoxicants; usury after clear proof (has been established). As for bribe, O Ammar, with regards to rulings, that is, indeed, disbelief in Allah, the Almighty, and His Messenger.

Whoever gains wealth from four [sources], it will not be accepted in four [situations]: whoever gains wealth from (1) embezzlement, (2) usury, (3) betrayal, and (4) thievery, it will not be accepted in: (1) zakat, (2) charity (sadaqa), (3) Hajj, and (4) `Umra. Abu Ja`far (as) said: Allah will not accept a Hajj or an `Umra from forbidden wealth.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I buy goods with deferred payment for a certain time. A man comes to me and says, ‘What is the price.’ I say, ‘It is so and so amount.’ I then sell it to him with a certain amount of profit. He (the Imam) said, ‘When you sell it in the form of Murabahah (capital plus profit) he has a share in the value of deferred payment also just as you have.’ I then said Istirja‘ (the expression, ‘To Allah we belong and to Him we all return’) and said, ‘We are destroyed.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Because of what?’ I replied, ‘There is no cloth on earth that I buy without Murabahah (capital plus profit) and they are bought from me even if I reduce the capital to say it is for so and so amount. When he (the Imam) saw my difficulties he (the Imam) said, ‘Do you want that I open a door for you to make things easier for you? Say, “It has costed me so and so and I sell it for so and so price;” do not say I sell it in the form of Murabahah (capital plus profit).”’
