جعفر بن محمد بن مسرور: من مشايخ الصدوق، وقد ترحم عليه، كما في بيان طريقه إلى محمد بن خالد القسري، وترضى عليه، كما في طريقه إلى عبيد الله المرافقي، والى عبيد الله بن علي الحلبي، والى عبد الله بن علي الحلبي، والى عبد الله بن لطيف التفليسي، وإلى إسماعيل بن الفضل، والى محمد بن الفيض، والى رومي بن زرارة، وإلى المعلى بن محمد البصري، وروى في جميع هذه الموارد عن الحسين بن محمد بن عامر. أقول: لا دلالة في شئ من ذلك، على وثاقة الرجل، ولا على حسنه، نعم احتمل الوحيد في التعليقة: أنه جعفر بن محمد بن قولويه، فإن النجاشي ذكر في ترجمة علي بن محمد بن جعفر بن موسى بن مسرور: أنه روى عنه أخوه جعفر ابن محمد بن قولويه. أقول: هذا الاحتمال بعيد جدا، فان علي بن محمد بن جعفر بن موسى بن مسرور، لم يسمع منه على ما ذكره النجاشي، وجعفر بن محمد بن قولويه، لم يرو عن علي بن محمد بن جعفر بن موسى بن مسرور، وانما روى كتابه عن أخيه (علي). كما روى عن أخيه في كتاب كامل الزيارات كثيرا، وليس في كلام النجاشي أن جعفر بن محمد بن قولويه روى عن أخيه علي بن محمد بن جعفر ابن موسى بن مسرور، وعليه فلم يثبت أن قولويه اسمه مسرور، بل الثابت خلافه.
