“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a woman who gives birth after al-‘Asr if she completes or stops fasting on that day. He (the Imam) said, ‘She must stop fasting, and complete Qada’ (compensatory fast) of that day.’”

“Abi ‘Abdillah (a.s.), has said: ‘If one in the state of I'tikaf becomes ill or a female begins to experience Haydh (menses); they can go home then after getting well perform the I’tikaf again and fast.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if al-Mubarat (disavowing) or al-Khul‘ can take place without Hayd (menses)-free period. He (the Imam) said, ‘It cannot take place without Hayd (menses)- free period.’”

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), ‘I have heard that Rabi‘ah al-Ra’iy says, “When a divorced woman experiences Hayd (menses) for the third time after divorce she becomes stranger to him and that the Hayd (menses)-free period is between the two Hayd (menses)” and he thinks that it is his own opinion.’ Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), said, ‘What he has said, by my life is not true because he has taken it from Ali (a.s.).’ I then asked, ‘What Ali (a.s.), has said about it?’ He (the Imam) said that he (Imam Ali) would say, ‘When she sees blood of the third Hayd (menses) (after divorce) her waiting period expires and he has no way to her and that Hayd (menses)-free period is between two Hayd (menses). She cannot marry before taking Ghusl (bath) for the third Hayd (menses) (after divorce).’ “Al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah has said that Ja‘far ibn Sama‘ah would say, ‘A divorced woman becomes stranger to him with the first drop of blood of Hayd (menses) for the third time after divorce. It is not lawful for her to marry until she takes Ghusl (bath) because of Hayd (menses) for the third time after divorce.’ Al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah has said that she becomes stranger with the first drop of blood because of Hayd (menses) for the third time after divorce and thereafter if she wants to marry she can do so or not to do so. Ali ibn Ibrahim has said that she can marry if so she wants or not to do so but if she marries he must not go to bed with her before Ghusl (bath).”’

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, if a woman waits for ten days experiencing blood discharge, then she becomes clean; and after three discharge-free days experiences blood discharge again, is she required to stop performing Salah (prayer)? He (the Imam) said, ‘No, she is Mustahadah. She must place cotton one piece after the other piece, perform two Salah (prayer) together one after the other with one Ghusl (bath) and her husband can come to her if he wants.”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman who experiences Istihadah. He (the Imam) said that the Messenger of Allah was asked about a woman who experienced Istihadah. He (the Messenger of Allah) told her to wait for a number of days equal to the days of her Hayd (menses) in which she must not perform Salah (prayer). She then must take Ghusl (bath) and place cotton, then secure it in place with a piece of cloth; then perform Salah (prayer) until blood comes out from the other side of the cloth.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘A bleeding woman must take Ghusl (bath) between every two Salah (prayer) and replace cotton and cloth, use perfume and burn incense. The piece of cloth must be like a belt to harness animals.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of al-Ta‘widh (protective talisman) which women hang on themselves. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, they can do so if it is incased with leather, silver, tube or iron.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Menopause happens at the age of fifty years.”’

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman whose Hayd (menses) stops for years and it comes back again. He (the Imam) said, ‘She must not perform Salah (prayer) until she is Hayd (menses) free.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan, (Musa) (a.s.), about the case of a man who divorces his wife in a menses-free period during which he has not gone to bed with her. He then goes back to her on the same day, then divorces her: if it becomes irrevocable with three divorces during one menses-free period. He (the Imam) said, ‘He has opposed the Sunnah.’ I then asked, ‘Is it necessary after going back to his wife to divorce her in another menses-free period of time?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, it is necessary.’ I said, ‘So that he can go to bed with her?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, he can do so.”’

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who divorces his wife when she experiences Hayd (menses). He (the Imam) said, ‘A divorce which is not according to Sunnah is invalid.’ I then asked, ‘What happens if a man divorces his wife three times in one place and time?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It must be returned to Sunnah.’”

‘A woman divorced becomes stranger to him with the first drop of blood because of Hayd (menses) during the last Hayd (menses)-free period.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that no divorce, choice or al-Mubarat (disavowing) can take place without Hayd (menses)-free period, free from sexual intercourse and without the presence of witnesses.’”

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘The minimum Hayd (menses) free period is ten days, that is, the time from the end of one period of Hayd (menses) to the beginning of the second one.’”

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’When a woman experiences menses at a time when she is about to commence the acts of her al-Hajj, she should take a shower and use al-kursuf, stand up with women behind her who should say ‘Amen’ for her prayers. She should say, ‘O Allah, I appeal before You through every name that is Your name or with which You have named Yourself for any of Your creatures or have kept in Your hidden knowledge before You. I appeal before You through the greatest of Your great names and through every word that You revealed to Moses, through every word that You revealed to Jesus and through every word that You revealed to Muhammad (SAW), cleanse me of this blood.’ If she wants to enter Masjid al-Haram (the Sacred Masjid) or the Masjid of the Holy Prophet, she should do the same thing. He (the Imam) said, ‘She should go to station of Jibril (Gabriel) which is under al-Mizab. This is his place wherefrom he would ask permission from the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘This is the place where she should pray to Allah, facing the direction of Ka‘bah and say the prayer about menses. She will be cleansed, by the will of Allah.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman who, with a people, experienced Hayd (menses), and asked them about it; but they did not know if she was required to assume the state of Ihram or not, so they left her in her condition until she entered al-Haram (the sacred area). He (the Imam) said, ‘If she has enough time, she must go to Miqat (place for assuming the state of Ihram) to assume the state of Ihram. If she does not have enough time, she must return back as much as she can after leaving al-Haram (the sacred area) so that she does not miss the rest of the acts of her al-Hajj.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the minimum duration of Hayd (menses). He (the Imam) said, ‘Its minimum is three days and the longest is ten days.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘Can a man and a woman take a Ghusl (bath) from the same water container? 5 He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, they can do so. They first must pour water on their hands and then place their hands in the water container. 5 I (the narrator) then asked, about the leftover water from which a woman during her Hayd (menses) has drunk. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not use it for Wudu 5 but it is permissible to use for Wudu 5 the leftover water from which a person after sexual relations has drank if such person is trustworthy (in matters of cleanliness). She then must wash her hands before placing them in the water container. The Messenger of Allah and ‘A’isha would take Ghusl (bath) together from one water container.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a pregnant woman who experiences blood discharge even when she is pregnant, like before every month, should she stop performing Salah (prayer)? He (the Imam) said, ’She must stop Salah if it continues.”’

“I once asked abu Ibrahim (a.s.), about the case of a woman who after giving birth waited for thirty days or more, then she becomes clean and performs Salah (prayer), then experiences blood discharge or yellowish things. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is yellowish she must take Ghusl (bath), perform Salah (prayer) and must not avoid Salah (prayer).”’
