Sahl ibn Ziyād kept company with al-Jawād (ʿa), al-Hādī (ʿa) and al-ʿAskarī (ʿa) and was of Rayy (originally Qumm). The books are divided about him: Rijāl al-Ṭūsī holds him reliable, while Al-Fihrist, Jāmiʿ al-Ruwāt and Rijāl al-Najāshī weaken him.

Each stands next to his name in an isnād — one took straight from the other — and no book calls them teacher or pupil. Each row says where that comes from: a book's chain index, or the chains this database holds.
