“About the case of a man who has three virgin daughters and gives one of them in marriage to a man without identifying the girl for the husband or to the witnesses. The husband assigns a mahr (dower) for her. At the time for him to meet the girl he is informed that it is the oldest girl. He then says to the father, ‘I married the youngest of your daughters.’ Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘If the husband had seen them and did not identify one of them the words of the father are accepted between him and Allah to give in marriage the girl that he had intended at the time forming marriage terms. If the husband had not seen all of them and had not identified any one of them at the time of forming the terms of marriage, the marriage then is invalid.’”

“About the case of a man who married the sister of his brother of breastfeeding, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘I do not like one’s marriage to the sister of his brother of breastfeeding.’”

“I once wrote to him (in a muzmar manner) (a.s.), and asked about a person who dies in ‘Arafat. Should he be buried in ‘Arafat or moved to al-Haram (the sacred area) and which one is more proper?’ He wrote back, ‘Moving to al-Haram (the sacred area) is more proper.

“I once heard him (the Imam) (a.s.), say, ‘One who leaves one of the two al-Haram (the Sacred places) when the day is high before performing Salat (prayer) of al-Zuhr and al-‘Asr a caller will call from behind him, ‘May Allah not accompany you.’”

Yes, You are our Lord. . . .”’ (7:172) “He (the Imam), while his father (a.s.) was listening, said, ‘My father narrated to me that Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, took a handful of clay, from which He created Adam. He poured upon it sweet water from Euphrates and left it for forty mornings. Then He poured upon it very salty water and left it for forty mornings. When the clay fermented He then kneaded it strongly and they (children of Adam) appeared as particles from his right and left sides. He ordered all of them to enter the fire. The people of the right hand entered it and it became cool and peaceful for them but the people of the left hand refused to enter.’”

“Once an Arab came on his camel in the time of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, sell my (herd of) camels for me.’ The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said, ‘I am not a camel seller in the market.’ He then said, ‘Give me an idea.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Sell this he-camel for so and so much and this she-camel for so and so much until he (the Messenger of Allah) explained for him about every camel there. The Arab man went to the market and sold them. He then came back to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘I swear by the One who has sent you with truth, not one dirham was less or more than what you had said it was, so accept my gift, O Messenger of Allah.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘No, I do not accept.’ He said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah, accept it.’ They continued speaking until he (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘You must give us a she-camel as a gift and you must not separate it from its young.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ‘Amir al-Mu’minin, issued judgment in favor of a man whose slave was hired by a goldsmith or another man. The judgment said, ‘If he has caused certain damage or has run away with something, the masters are held responsible. 5 ”

“A certain person of our people lived in al-Madinah and he suffered severe constraints. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said to him, ‘You must go to find a shop in the market, set up your display and keep a jar of water with you and guard the door of your shop. He (the narrator) has said that he followed the instruction and remained in that condition as long as Allah wanted. Then a company of people came from Egypt. Every one of them left their goods with people whom each one knew until shops became full. Only one man was left who did not find a shop to store his goods. People of the market told him that there is man who has no problems and there are no goods in his shop. You can store your goods in his shop. He went to him and asked him, ‘Can I store my goods in your shop?’ He replied, ‘Yes, you can do so.’ He stored his goods in his shop and he began to sell his goods one by one until it was time for his companions to leave and of his goods very little was left. He did not like to stay, so he said to our friend, ‘I leave these goods with you to sell and send the proceeds to me.’ He agreed. The company left as well as the man along with them, leaving the goods with him. Our companion sold the goods and sent the proceeds to him. He (the narrator) has said that when the company from Egypt left, he sent goods to this man and he sold them and sent the proceeds to him. When he experienced this he stayed in Egypt and would send goods to him prepared. He (the narrator) has said that he was set at the right course, thus, he became affluent and rich.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘One who faces constraint in his living’ -or he (the Imam) said ‘in his sustenance- should buy small ones (of animal) and sell large ones.’” It is also narrated from him (the Imam) that if one’s plans do not work he should work in al-kursuf (a certain kind of fabric).

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘Even if you find enough reason to believe that this task (the rise of al-Qa’im with divine authority) will take place tomorrow, still you must not neglect work for a living. If you cannot complete the work do (what you can)”’

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who owes to me a right but he denies it and then leaves in my trust a certain amount of his property: if I can offset my rights with him from his property with me. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, you cannot do so because it is treachery’”

“I once remained behind from performing al-Hajj and abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), asked, ’What caused you to remain behind from performing al-Hajj ? 5 I replied, ’I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I bailed out a person but he violated his responsibility . 5 He (the Imam) said, ‘What do you have to do with bailsman-ship? Did you not know that people of the centuries before were destroyed ? 5 He (the Imam) then said, ‘A people committed a great many sins. They then became severely afraid. Another people came to them and said, ‘Your sins are upon us . 5 Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent upon them suffering and He most Blessed, most High, said, ‘You were afraid of Me, then you defied Me . 555

“I once went to visit abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and I met Zurarah who received me when he was coming out of the presence of the Imam. He (the Imam) said to me, ‘O Walid, is it not strange to you that Zurarah asks me about working for these people? What does he want me to say? Does he want me to say no, so that he can narrate it from me?’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘O Walid, when did the Shi ’ah ask about working for them? The Shi ’ah would only say, ‘You can eat their food, use their drink and live under their protection.’ When did the Shi‘ah ask about it (working for them)?”’

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the legal status of the income from cupping. He (the Imam) replied, There is no offense in it.’ I then asked about income from he-goat for goat-grooming. He (the Imam) replied, ’Even though Arab people consider it scornful, there is no offense in receiving such income.’”

“A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about selling slave-girl singers. He (the Imam) said, ‘Buying and selling them is unlawful, teaching them (singing) is disbelief and listening to them is hypocrisy.’”

If his friend is absent, he then must return it to the one from whom he had received the amount.’”

“About the case of buying al-Asrub with silver, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If al- Asrub is more prevalent then it is not unlawful . 555

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you like to plant something, take a handful of seed, face al-Qiblah (al-Ka’bah) and say, “Have you seen what you cultivate? Do you cultivate it or We are the ones who cultivate.” (56:62-63) Then say, “In fact Allah is the cultivator” three times then say, “O Lord, make it blessed grain and provide us safety in it.” Then spread the handful from your hand on the plain ground.’”

“I once heard abu Ja’far (a.s.), saying, ‘Whoever of people revive a land and build it, they are more deserving to have it and it is for them. 5 ”
