Nahj al-Balāgha
Hadith 1948وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى: مَنْ فَاتَهُ حَسَبُ نَفْسِهِ لَمْ يَنْفَعْهُ حَسَبُ آبَائِهِ.
In another version it is thus: Whoever misses personal attainment cannot be benefited by his forefathers’ attainments.
