Amīr al-mu’minīn, peace he upon him, said: Supererogatory worship cannot bring about nearness to Allāh if it hampers the obligatory. ٣٩. وَقَالَ (عليه السلام): لَا قُرْبَةَ بِالنَّوَافِلِ إِذَا أَضَرَّتْ بِالْفَرَائِضِ. Similar narrations Ghurar al-Ḥikam #7922 Imam Ali (AS) said, When recommended acts come in the way of obligatory actions, then abandon them. Ghurar al-Ḥikam #7926 Imam Ali (AS) said, No closeness is achieved through recommended actions if they hamper the obligatory actions.
