Shaykh Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Ṣaduq
۞
10-20 Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-ʿAṭṭār (ra) narrated to us, he said: my father narrated to me; from Muḥammad b. Aḥmad, he said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Rāzī narrated to me; from al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī ʿUthmān; from Aḥmad b. ʿUmar al-Ḥallāl; from Yaḥyā b. ʿImrān al-Ḥalabī, he said
he heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh (ʿas) saying, "An arrogant person should not hope for a praiseworthy reputation, nor a swindler for many friends. An ill-mannered person should not hope for nobility, nor should a miser hope that his kin maintain their relations with him. One who mocks people should not hope for true friendship; neither should one of little understanding hope to be in a position he will be allowed to judge. A gossip should not hope for peace, nor a covetous person hope for comfort in his heart. One who punishes minor transgressions should not hope for prominence, nor should an inexperienced individual who is over-confident in their view hope to be in power."
Notes
There is a very similar maxim presented as a general saying, which is quoted in Muḍāhat Amthāl Kalīlah wa Dimnah, p. 21, by Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Ḥusayn al-Yamanī, the fourth-century Fāṭimid poet and litterateur. This beautiful ḥadīth, worth lengthy reflection, is a wonderful example of the wisdom literature contained in our corpus.
