Shaykh Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Ṣaduq
۞
10-60 Aḥmad b. Ziyād b. Jaʿfar al-Hamadānī, may God be pleased with him, narrated to us, he said: ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm b. Hāshim narrated to us; from his father; from Muḥammad b. Abī ʿUmayr; from Ābān b. ʿUthmān al-Aḥmar, he said that
he heard Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad (ʿas) narrate from his father (ʿas), he said that he heard Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī say, "The Messenger of God (ṣ) was asked about the sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. He said, 'They are ten in number and al-ʿAbbās.'" The compiler of this book, may God be pleased with him, commented on this tradition: They are ʿAbd Allāh; Abū Ṭālib; al-Zubayr; Ḥamzah; al-Ḥārith, the eldest; al-Ghaydāq; al-Muqawwim; Ḥajl; and ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, who was called Abū Lahab; Ḍirār; and al-ʿAbbās. Some people say that al-Muqawwim is Ḥajl. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib had ten names by which he was known to the Arabs, the Caesars of Rome, the Shahs of Iran, the Neguses of Abyssinia. Among his names was ʿĀmir (flourishing and well peopled), Shaybah al-Ḥamd (the white beard of praise), Sayyid al-Baṭḥāʾ (the chief of al-Baṭḥāʾ), Sāqī al-Ḥajīj (the waterbearer of the pilgrims), Sāqī al-Mughīth (the waterbearing relieving rain), Ghayth al-Warā fī al-ʿĀm al-Jadab (the rain for all men in a year of drought), Abū al-Sādah al-ʿAsharah (the father of the ten chiefs), ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (the slave of al-Muṭṭalib), and Ḥāfir Zamzam (the excavator of Zamzam). None before him had these names.
Notes
Note that this tradition is part of the historical corpus of Ābān b. ʿUthmān al-Aḥmar, one of the Companions of Consensus who had composed a lost but now partially-reconstructed sīrah called K. al-Mubtadaʾ wa al-Mabʿath wa al-Maghāzī wa al-Wafāh wa al-Saqīfah wa al-Riddah.
