Hadith 546

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from `Abd al-Rahman b. Siyaba from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said
Backbiting (ghiba) includes saying regarding your brother that which Allah has hidden. Slander (buhtan) includes saying regarding your brother that which is not [true] in him.
17 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا عبد الله ابن جعفر الحميري، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن عبد الرحمن بن سيابة، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال
إن من الغيبة أن تقول في أخيك ما ستره الله عليه، وإن من البهتان أن تقول في أخيك ما ليس فيه (3).
