The obligations of Hajj are seven: (1) ihram, (2) the four talbiyat – which are labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la shareeka laka labbark, innal hamda wan-ni`mata laka wal mulk, la sharika lak labbayk (I am at Your service, O Allah, I am at Your service. I am at Your service, You have no partners, I am at Your service. Surely, the praise, blessing, and kingdom is Yours. You have no partners. I am at Your service). Other forms of talbiya are from the sunna. The one performing talbiya should frequently say labbayka dhil ma`arij labbayk (I am at Your service, Lord of Pathways of Ascent), for that is the talbiyya of the Prophet (s). (3) Making circuits (tawaf) around the House is obligatory. (4) Praying two units at the maqam of Ibrahim (as) is obligatory. (5) The sa`i between Safa and Marwa is obligatory. (6) Standing at `Arafa is obligatory. (7) The hadi al-tamattu` is obligatory. Every other rite of Hajj is a sunna.
