“About the case of buying and the sale of Romans, Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said, ‘(If they are for sale), buy and sell them.’”

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the extra in measurement and weighing. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is not excessive, it is not harmful.’”

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who has cattle; if he can sell their milk without measurement. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can do so until it stops (coming through the udder) or something similar.’”

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘The exchange of one camel for two camels, one stumper for two at the same time is not harmful.”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘If someone asks you to buy for him a certain merchandise, you must not buy it for him from your own shop even if the merchandise from your shop be better.’”

“About the case of a man who buys foodstuff of a certain town, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If the foodstuff of a certain town exactly is not mentioned he can give it from anywhere he likes . 555

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who purchases a certain kind of goods but its value falls. He had paid Zakat before purchasing such asset. Is there Zakat on him or Zakat becomes due when he sells it? He (the Imam) said, ’If he had held it to increase his capital, he is required to pay Zakat.’”

“About the case of a man who buys certain goods with deferred payment for an appointed time, abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘He cannot buy it in the manner of Murabahah (capital plus profit) without deferment for an appointed time which is agreed upon; and if he sells in the manner of Murabahah (capital plus profit) without informing the party, then the one who has bought is entitled for a deferment of similar duration.’”

“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked, when I was present, by a man who said, ‘My brother comes from and goes to the mountains, milks sheep of known age for an appointed time; then he is given four years old in place of three years old.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Is it with fine consent of his party?’ he replied, ‘Yes, it is so.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who makes advance payment of dirhams in exchange for wheat until the appoint time comes and he does not have any foodstuff but has animals and other assets and slaves; if it is lawful for him to take from his assets in exchange for his foodstuff. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he must name such and such items for such and such Sa‘ (of foodstuff). 5 ”

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I have palm tree fruits in Basrah. I sell them for a certain price excluding one Kur (a certain measurement) of the dates or more or the cluster of dates.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no offense in it.’ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what do you say about selling for two years?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no offense in it.’ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, this is great among us.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘As you mentioned it, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, had made it permissible but they wronged each other. He (a.s.), then said, ‘You must not buy it until fruits appear and are out of danger.”’

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about the case of a man who bought dirhams in exchange for dinars; then weighed them, cashed them and counted their prices to find the amount of dinar, then said to him to send his slave so he gave him dinars. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not like his separation before taking dinars.’ I then said, ‘It is only in the same house and their places are close to each other and this becomes difficult for them.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘When he completes weighing and cashing he must instruct the slave that he wants to send, to become the seller and give the wariq (dirham) to him and receive dinars from him as he delivers to him the wariq (dirham).”’

“I once asked him (the Imam); ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of decorated swords in which there was silver sold for gold for an appointed time. He (the Imam) said, ‘People do not differ that on credit; it is Riba ’ (unlawful additional payment). They differ about the deal of hand in hand.’ I then asked, ‘Can he buy it with dirhams in cash?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘My father would say, “I like it to be along with something.’” I then asked, ‘What happens if dirhams given are more than the silver in it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘How can they maintain precaution in it?’ I said that they think they know it. He (the Imam) said, ‘If they know it then it is not unlawful, otherwise, if they include something else along with it, is more desirable to me.”’

“A man complained before abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), against his poverty and deprivation in business after being affluent and that in whatever way he moves to make a living, he faces difficulties. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), commanded him to go to the special place of the Messenger of Allah which is between his grave and pulpit. ‘Perform two Rak‘at Salah (prayer) there and say, one hundred times, ‘O Lord, I appeal to You through Your power, Your determination, Your majesty and through whatever Your knowledge has encompassed, please facilitate my business and increase it for my sustenance in a way that is better and of good consequences.’ The man has said that thereafter in whichever way I moved for business Allah granted me benefits.”
