"The slightest form of polytheism is when a man invents an opinion and then loves and hates based on it."

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘A wine addict will meet Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, when he will meet Him, as a worshipper of idols will do.’”

“Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘A wine addict is like an idol worshipper.’”

“The lowest form of polytheism is to invent a new religion and hate and love according to it.”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, has narrated from his father (a.s.), who has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘No other thing is more effacing to Islam than stinginess.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Greediness creeps like an ant and has branches (or thorns) like polytheism.’”

“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, when he was asked about disbelief and paganism which one was first, ‘Disbelief is first. Satan was the first to become an unbeliever and his disbelief was something other than al-Shirk (paganism) he did not invite to worship anyone other than Allah, he invited to such worship afterwards and thus, became a pagan.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu 5 minin was asked about ‘Isaf and Na’ilah, which Quraysh worshipped. He (the Imam) said, ‘They were two fair looking young persons and one of them had feminine signs. They were performing Tawaf around the House. It happened that there was no one in the House. One of them acted indecently toward the other and they both changed in a metamorphosis process. Quraysh then said, ‘Had it not been for Allah’s happiness that people worship them along with Him, He would not cause metamorphosis process to change them as such . ‘“

“The people who do innovation (Bid-a’t) will be brought on the Day of Judgment in the same way as black and white bullocks are prominent. Qadiris will in the same way appear prominent among them and Allah, the Mighty and Sublime will ask: What was your intention? They will reply: Our intention was to seek Your pleasure. Allah will say: Your sins are forgiven but of the Qadiris are not. This is so because they committed polytheism in ignorance.”

Indeed, the people of the Jahiliya, when a female camel gave birth to two children in one belly [1], they would say: «She connected» and they would not consider it allowable to slaughter it, nor eat it. If she gave birth to ten, they would make it a sa’iba, and they would not permit its back [2] nor to eat it. The haam [3] is the male camel which they did not consider allowable. Then Allah, Exalted and Glorious is He, sent down that He had not forbidden anything of that.

In what is our salvation anon? So, he said: Surely, salvation is in not [trying] to deceive Allah, lest He deceive you. Whoever deceives Allah, Allah will deceive him and strip faith from him – he deceives himself, if he but knew. So, it was said to him: How could he deceive Allah? He said: He does what Allah commands, but he does it for other than Him. So, fear Allah, and avoid flaunting (riya’), for it is associating partners with Allah (shirk billah). Surely, the flaunter will be called by four names on the Day of Resurrection: “O disbeliever, O transgressor, O treacherous, O loser! Your deeds have fallen, and your reward has been nullified. There will be no reward for you today.” So, seek your reward from Him that you are working for.

I asked Aba Abdullah as-Sadiq (MGB), ‘May I be your ransom! Why do we believe that our opponents areatheists and will go to Hell, but we do not believe that we ourselves and our companions are going to go to Paradise?’ The Imam (MGB) replied, ‘That is due to your own weakness. You should know that you will go to Paradise, if you do not commit any major sins.’ I asked, ‘What are the major sins?’ The Imam (MGB) said, ‘The greater of the major sins are associating others as partners with the Honorable the Exalted God; emigration from an Islamic environment; damnation of parents; accusing pious women of fornication; fleeing from a holy war; oppressively devouring the properties of an orphan; usury after having clear proof of its forbiddance ; and murdering a believer.’ I asked the Imam (MGB), ‘What about adultery and stealing?’ The Imam (MGB) replied, ‘They are not like the above.’”The compiler of the book - may God be pleased with him - said, “The various narrations in this book which differ in the quantity of major sins are not really that different from each other, although some state that there are five major sins, while others have stated that there are seven, eight and even more major sins. However, these are not different from each other since after the sin of associating partners with God which is the greatest major sin, the other sins are somewhat greater than the following ones, and every other major sin is less than the sin of associating a partner with God.”
