“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Divorce of a drunken man does not have any valid effect.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), about al-Fuqa’ . He (the Imam) said, ‘It is wine exactly.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about drinking al-Fuqa ’ and he (the Imam) disliked it very intensely.” Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from ibn Faddal from Muhammad ibn Tsma‘il a similar Hadith.”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the divorce of a drunken man. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not permissible and it is not an honorable thing.’”

“Once I asked abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy (a.s.), in writing and asked about al-Fuqa ’ (beer). He (the Imam) wrote to me saying, ‘Do not go close to it; it is wine.’”

“Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘All intoxicating substances are unlawful, everything fermented is unlawful, and al-Fuqa’ (beer) is unlawful.’”

“The following are ill-gotten property: money paid for dead animals; money paid for dogs; money paid for wine; the dowry of the fornicatress; the bribes for the judge; and the money paid for fortune-telling.”

“I once wrote to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), asked about al-Fuqa ’ and described it for him (the Imam) how it is made. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not drink it and do not come back to me about it again.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, and abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have made it clear that wine is the head of all sins.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks wine considering it lawful, he will be in hell forever, and one who drinks believing that it is unlawful will be punished in the fire.’”

“Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘A wine addict is like an idol worshipper.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a large jug in which there is wine, then it dries up if vinegar can be kept in it. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, one can do so.’”

“A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a medicine which is made into dough from alcohol to be used as Kohl (eyeliner) for the eyes. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has not placed cures in things that He has made unlawful.’”

narrated to me Ayyub ibn Rashid who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Balad ask abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about al-Nabidh and he (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ He then said, ‘The residue is placed in it.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘It is the worst drink, however, you can soak it in water in the morning to drink in the evening.’ He then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, it is bad for our bellies.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is much worse for your bellies if you drink what is unlawful.’”

“Surely the Almighty Allah has locked sin in a house. There is a door to that house which is locked. There is a key of that lock and the key to sin is wine.”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about grape juice which is cooked on fire until it boils for one hour; then the owner drinks it. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it changes and boils, it then becomes devoid of goodness until two-thirds of it is evaporated and only one-third has remained.’”

“A murderer, a drunkard and a slanderer will not be able to enter Paradise.”

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor and dies when there is something of wine inside him because of which he has not repented, he will be raised from his grave confused, his mouth bent to one side, his saliva flowing and crying woes and destruction.’”

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about al-Nabidh. He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, had made the very substance of wine unlawful and the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has made every intoxicating liquor unlawful.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah has made wine unlawful, regardless of its being a small or large quantity as He has made dead animals, blood and pork unlawful. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, of drinks, has made intoxicating liquor unlawful. Whatever the Messenger of Allah has made unlawful Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has also made unlawful’, and he (the Imam) said, ‘Whatever in large quantity is intoxicating liquor, it is unlawful in small quantity also.’”
