Ali ibn Shu'ayb wrote to Abu al-Hasan (as) asking: "A woman breastfed one of my children. Is it permissible for me to marry one of her children?" Imam (as) wrote in response, "That is not permissible because her children have become like your own children."

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs al-Hajj with money that he has borrowed and has already performed Hajjata al-Islam. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can do so; Allah will pay it off for him if Allah so wills.”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), would spread his gown as furnishing when the husband of his daughter or sister would come to him (the Imam) and would say, ‘Welcome to the one who has taken good care of a need and the one who protected the privacy.’”

“About the case of a woman who is divorced and experiences Hayd (menses) once every three months, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When three months are over her waiting period is complete. For every month he counts for her one Hayd (menses).”’

"In the case of khulʿ (divorce initiated by the wife with compensation), if a woman says to her husband, 'I will not perform ghusl (ritual purification) for you after intimacy, I will not honor your oaths, and I will bring into your bed someone you dislike,' then when she says this to him, it becomes permissible for him to divorce her through khulʿ, and it is lawful for him to take from her what he has taken."

If two just witness testify to prove it, she does not need to complete any ‘Iddah (waiting period), otherwise, she must commence her ‘Iddah (waiting period) from the day she is informed.’”

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about selling the sword decorated with cash (gold or silver). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ I then asked about selling on credit. He (the Imam) said, ‘If what is sold for cash is like what it is for its silver, then is not unlawful; or give foodstuff.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Three issues provide comfort for a believing person: a spacious house which provides privacy and in bad condition keeps him out of the sight of people, a virtuous wife who helps him in his worldly affairs and those of the life hereafter and a daughter whom he escorts out of the house on her death or on her wedding.’”

"She should be appraised (for her full value), and both she and her husband must work to pay off the remaining value of her price after her appraisal. Whatever state - whether freedom or servitude - applies to the woman will also apply to her children."

I wrote to Imam (as) regarding a man who proposed marriage to his uncle's daughter. The uncle instructed one of his brothers to marry his daughter to the man. However, during the marriage contract, the man mistakenly mentioned a different name instead of the daughter's actual name, which was Fatimah. The man did not have any daughter by the name he mentioned during the contract. The Imam (as) responded: "There is no harm in it."

“There is a man who divorces his wife and does not go back to her until three Hayd (menses) are complete, then marries her then divorces her and leaves until three Hayd (menses) are complete and does not go back to her to touch her. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘He can marry forever as long as he does not go back to her to touch”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the pilgrim’s performing al-Hajj and al-‘Umrah is part of the undertaking of Allah. If he dies when on his way, Allah forgives his sins. If he dies in the state of Ihram, Allah raises him saying Talbiyah (here I am O Lord, to obey Your command). If he dies in one of the two sacred places, Allah raises him well protected. If he dies on his way back home, Allah forgives all of his sins.”

“I once wrote to him (the Imam) (a.s.), about the case of a man who proposed marriage to the daughter of his uncle who instructed a certain one of his brothers to give his daughter in marriage to him and she is the one for whom he has proposed. The man by mistake gives her a different name and no one of that name exists in the family. Her name was Fatimah but he gives her a different name. He (the Imam) signed the answer which said, ‘It is not harmful/”

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said, ‘When the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, arranged the marriage of Ali and Fatimah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, he went to see her but found her weeping. He (the Messenger of Allah) asked her, ‘What has made you weep, by Allah, had there been anyone better in my family than him I would not have given you in marriage to him, and I have not given you in marriage to him but it is Allah who has given you in marriage to him with a mahr (dower) of al- Khums (one-fifth), for as long as there are the skies and earth.’”

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘Why should you not perform al-Hajj this year?’ I replied, ‘There is a business between me and a people, other preoccupation in which perhaps there is goodness.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, by Allah, Allah has not done anything good for you in this.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘No other thing prevents a servant (of Allah) from this House except sin and what is forgiven is greater.’”

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who has a slave-girl with whom he goes to bed seeking to have a child, but does not become fortunate to have a child and gives her to his brother as a gift or sells her and she gives birth to several children; if his children from a woman other than her can marry the children of his brother from her. He (the Imam) asked me to say it again. I said it again and he (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is not unlawful.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a woman came to ‘Umar and said, ‘I have committed fornication, so cleanse me/ He commanded to stone her to death ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), was asked about it and he asked, ‘How did you commit fornication?’ She replied, ‘I was passing through wilderness and I became thirsty severely. I ask an Arab man for water but he refused unless I made myself available for him. When thirst increased and I feared for my life he gave me water and I availed myself for him.’ ’Amir al-Mu’minin said, ‘This is marriage by the Lord of al- Ka’bah.’” (She must have been unmarried so al-Mut‘ah (advantageous marriage) was possible).

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘One of your followers offers greetings of peace to you and he wants to marry a woman who has agreed and he likes her due to certain matters about her and she has a husband who has divorced her three times on non-Sunnah basis. He dislikes marrying her without your instruction so you command him to do so. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘It is an issue of marriage and the matter of marriage is severe because from marriage are children and we maintain precaution, so he must not marry her.’”

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the meaning of the words of Shu‘ayb, ‘(Shu‘ayb) said to (Moses), “I want to give one of my daughters to you in marriage on the condition that you will work for me for eight years, but you may continue for two more years only out of your own accord’” (28:27) and that which one of the terms he completed. He (the Imam) said, ‘Completion was of the longest term which was ten years.’ I then asked, ‘Did he go to bed before completing the term or afterwards?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It was before completing the terms.’ I then asked, ‘If a man marries a woman and stipulates with her father for the wages of two months if it is permissible.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Moses knew that he will complete the terms. How can this man know that he remains alive until the time of paying? At the time of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, people married women for teaching a chapter of al-Quran, for one dirham and for one handful of wheat.’”

“There is a man who divorces his wife, then does not go back to her until three cycles of Hayd (menses) are complete, then divorces and leaves her until three cycles of Hayd (menses) are complete then marries her then divorces without going back to her and leaves until three cycles of Hayd (menses) are complete. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘He can marry her forever as long as he does not go back and touch her.’ Ibn Bukayr and his companions were of this opinion and ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah narrated it to me that he asked, ‘On what basis do you say so?’ He replied, ‘I say so on the basis of Hadith narrated by Rifa‘ah who has narrated from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that it destroys what is passed. He (the narrator) has said, that Rifa‘ah has only said, ‘He divorced, then another man married her, then divorced; then the first man married her and this destroys the first ‘Talaq’ (divorce).”’
