hadith 1849
16. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Ali ibn Sa‘id from Sulayman al-Ja‘fariy who has said the following
“Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘One who seeks cognizance with chess is like one seeking cognizance with the fire.’”
سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ
الْمُطَّلِعُ فِي الشِّطْرَنْجِ كَالْمُطَّلِعِ فِي النَّارِ .

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Khalid and al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id all from al- Nadr ibn Suwayd from Durust from Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘...Stay away from wickedness, idols, and false words.’ (22:30) He (the Imam) said, “The idols’ is a reference to chess and ‘false words’ stands for al-Ghina’ (music (and singing)).”’
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الشَّحَّامِ قَالَ
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَاجْتَنِبُوا الرِّجْسَ مِنَ الْأَوْثانِ وَ اجْتَنِبُوا قَوْلَ الزُّورِ فَقَالَ الرِّجْسُ مِنَ الْأَوْثَانِ الشِّطْرَنْجُ وَ قَوْلُ الزُّورِ الْغِنَاءُ .

3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from all from ibn Mahbub from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Sa‘id who has said the following
“Once, abu al-Hassan ‘Alayhi al-Salam, sent one of the slaves to buy eggs for him. The slave took one or two eggs and gambled with them. When the slave came back he (the Imam) used the eggs for food. A servant told him (the Imam) about gambling. He (the Imam) asked for a washbowl and threw up.”
3- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَأَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ
بَعَثَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) غُلاماً يَشْتَرِي لَهُ بَيْضاً فَأَخَذَ الْغُلامُ بَيْضَةً أَوْ بَيْضَتَيْنِ فَقَامَرَ بِهَا فَلَمَّا أَتَى بِهِ أَكَلَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَوْلًى لَهُ إِنَّ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقِمَارِ قَالَ فَدَعَا بِطَشْتٍ فَتَقَيَّأَهُ.

hadith 689
1. We were told by Mudaffar bin Ja’far bin Mudaffar al-Alawi, may Allah grant him mercy, that he said: We were told by Ja’far bin Muhammed bin Mas’ud, from his father, that he said: We were told by Hussain bin Ishkeeb, that he said: We were told by Muhammed bin Surri, from Hussain bin Sa’eed, from Abu Ahmad, Muhammed bin Abi ‘Umayr, from Ali bin Abi Hamza, from Abdul-A’la, that he said
I asked Ja’far bin Muhammed, peace be upon them both, about the saying of Allah, Exalted and Glorious is He: «So, avoid the filth of idols and forged statement» (22:30). He said: Filth from idols is chess, and forged speech is singing. I said: The saying of Him, Exalted and Glorious is He: «And among the people is the one who buys amusement of speech» (31:6). He said: From it is singing.
حدثنا المظفر بن جعفر بن المظفر العلوي - رحمه الله - قال: حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن مسعود، عن أبيه، قال حدثنا الحسين بن إشكيب، قال حدثنا محمد بن السري عن الحسين بن سعيد، عن أبي أحمد محمد بن أبي عمير، عن علي بن أبي حمزة، عن عبد الأعلى قال
سألت جعفر بن محمد عليهما السلام عن قول الله عز وجل: " فاجتنبوا الرجس من الأوثان واجتنبوا قول الزور " قال: الرجس من الأوثان الشطرنج، وقول الزور الغناء، قلت: قوله عز وجل " ومن الناس من يشتري لهو الحديث " قال: منه الغناء.
