“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Chess is al-Maysir (gambling) and dice is al-Maysir (gambling).”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘In the month of Ramadan Allah forgives certain people except a drunk person, a chess playing person and a heretic.’”

I asked him about forged statement. He said: From it is the saying of a man to the one who sings: «You did well».

“Once a man from the people of al-Basrah came to abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal (a.s.), and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I sit with people who play chess but I do not play. I only look at it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘What do you have to do with a gathering to which Allah does not look?”’

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘You must not consume your assets in invalid dealings among your selves. . . (2:184) He (the Imam) said, ‘Among Quraysh a man gambled even his wife and property. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, prohibited such dealings.’”

“I once asked Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about these things with which people play, like dice, chess... until I mentioned al-Sudar (a certain game). He (the Imam) said, ‘If Allah makes right distinct from wrong, where will it fall?’ I said that it would fall in the wrong category. He (the Imam) said, ‘What then do you have to do with anything which is wrong?”’

Messenger of Allah (a.s.) has said, “If one speaks and his speech is something other than speaking of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, he is doing something useless. If one is silent and his silence is for something other than Allah he is forgetful.’” He (the Imam) then remained calm and the man left.’”

I asked Aba Abdullah as-Sadiq (MGB) about chess and backgammon. He (MGB)said, ‘God’s Prophet (MGB) said, Do not play them.’ I asked, ‘What about listening to songs?’ He (MGB) said, ‘There is no use in it. Do not listen to them.’ I asked, ‘What about drinking date wine?’ He (MGB) replied, ‘God’s Prophet (MGB) has forbidden drinking any intoxicator. All that is intoxicating is forbidden.’I asked, ‘What about using the dishes in which wine is made?’ He (MGB) replied, ‘God’s Prophet (MGB) has forbidden four kinds of them which are: Daba, Mazqat, Hantam and Naqir.’ I asked, ‘What are these?’ He (MGB) replied, ‘Daba refers to squash skin. Mazqat refers the potter’s vat. Hantam refers to grey colored pots and Naqir refers a wooden dish which was carved out until its middle became empty during the Age of Ignorance and they filled it with dates. Some have said that Hantam refers to green pots.’”
