"If a man separates the Zakat from his wealth and designates it for a group of people, but it gets lost, or he sends it to them, and it gets lost, then there is no liability upon him."

"Whoever withholds even a carat of Zakat is neither a believer nor a Muslim. At the time of death, he will request to be sent back (to the world). This is the meaning of Allah’s (swt) statement: 'Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord (azj), send me back, that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind"' (Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:99-100)."

Hadith.1630 - Abu Basir asked Abu Abdullah Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) about a man who possesses eight hundred dirhams, works as a cobbler, and has many dependents: "Is he allowed to take Zakat?" The Imam (as) replied: "O Abu Muhammad, does he profit from his dirhams enough to sustain his dependents and still have a surplus?" Abu Basir said: "Yes." The Imam asked: "How much surplus does he have?" Abu Basir replied: "I do not know." The Imam (as) said: "If the surplus is equivalent to half of their sustenance, then he should not take Zakat. But if it is less than half, then he may take Zakat." Abu Basir then asked: "Does he have to pay Zakat on his wealth?" The Imam (as) replied: "Yes." Abu Basir asked: "What should he do?" The Imam (as) said: "He should use it to provide more generously for his dependents in their food and clothing and keep a portion to give to others. Whatever he takes from Zakat, he should use to improve the condition of his dependents until they reach a standard comparable to others."

“Once, abu Basir and I visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and abu Basir said to him (the Imam), ‘We have a friend and he is a truthful person. He follows Allah’s religion as we do.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Who is he, O abu Basir, whom you admire?’ Abu Basir, replied, ‘He is al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Sabih.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘May Allah grant mercy to al-Walid ibn Sabih! What has happened to him, O abu Muhammad?’ Abu Basir said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, he has a house which is valued at four thousand dirham. He has a slave-girl and slave servant who provides water every day for two to four dirham minus feed for the camel and he has a family. Can he receive Zakat?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can receive Zakat.’ Abu Basir said, ‘But he has all these assets.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O abu Muhammad, do you command me to command him to sell his house which is for his dignity and the place of his birth? Alternatively, must he sell his slave-girl who protects him from hot and cold weather and protects him and his wife’s dignity? On the other hand, must he sell his slave and his camel, which are means for his living and expenses? In fact, he must receive Zakat and it is lawful for him. He does not have to sell his house, his slave or his camel.’”

Indeed, it is among humbleness that a man is pleased with one sitting place before more sitting places, that he sends peace upon the one he meets, that he abandons quarreling, even if he is rightful, and that he does not like to be praised for godfearness.
