“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Wine is the head of all sins.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A wine addict is one who drinks whenever he finds.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A wine addict will meet Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, as a worshipper of idols will do.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days. If he dies within the forty days, he dies as one of the ignorant people (pagans) and if he repents (turns to), Allah also turns to him.’”

Once Imam Ja’far Sadiq was asked about the ruling regarding a drunkard. Imam (a.s.) replied, “His prayers will not be accepted till a time even a single drop of wine is present in his veins.”

The sins that change graces are transgression. The sins that cause regret are murder. The sins that cause wraths to descend is oppression. The sins that violate protections, which are the veils, is the drinking of wine. The ones that restrain sustenance is fornication. The ones that cause termination to haste is disconnecting from relatives. The ones that repel (the answering of) prayer and darken the atmosphere is disobedience to parents.

The Messenger of Allah, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Family, said: Three who will not enter Paradise: one who is addicted to wine; one who is addicted to magic; and one who cuts kinship relations. The one who dies as an addicted to wine, Allah, Exalted and Glorious is He, will make him drink from the River of Ghouta. It was said: And what is the River of Ghouta? It was said: A river that runs from the genitals of harlots, and their smell harms the people of the Fire.

narrated to me Ayyub ibn Rashid who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Balad ask abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about al-Nabidh and he (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ He then said, ‘The residue is placed in it.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘It is the worst drink, however, you can soak it in water in the morning to drink in the evening.’ He then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, it is bad for our bellies.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is much worse for your bellies if you drink what is unlawful.’”

There are six groups of people who do not deserve to be greeted. There are six people who do not deserve to lead the prayer and there are six acts which are those that the people of Lot did. Those who do not deserve to be greeted are: Jews; Christians;, chess players; backgammon players; alcoholics; people who play the Barbat and Tanbour ; those who joke around by swearing at each other’s mother; and poets. Those who do not deserve to lead prayers are: those who are born as a result of fornication; those who have abandoned the religion; those who emigrate from an Islamic environment; those who drink wine; those punished for violating Islamic decrees; and those who are not circumcised. And the following are things that the people of Lot did: shooting round bullets using a kind of sling ; chewing gum; walking with their clothes hanging out and running around with pride; and leaving their shirt’s unbuttoned (so that their chest is seen).”

“I liked al-Nabidh a great deal and I said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I want to describe al-Nabidh before you.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, allow me to describe it for you. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “Every intoxicating liquor is unlawful and whatever in large quantity is intoxicating liquor, it in a small quantity is also unlawful.’” I then asked, ‘What is this al-Nabidh for drinking in the courtyard of al-Ka‘bah?’ He (the Imam) said to me, ‘This was not the drinking place. The drinking place is Zamzam. Do you know who first changed it?’ I replied, ‘No’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib had a Habalah. Do you know what a Habalah is?’ I replied, ‘No, I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is grapes. He would soak raisins in the morning for them to drink it in the evening and soak it in the evening for them to drink in the morning. It was done to reduce the thickness of water for people but these people have crossed the limits so do not drink or go near it.’”
