Hadith.1389 - Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj reports from Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) that when he would rise in the last part of the night, he would raise his voice such that the people of the household could hear and say: Allahumma a‘inni ‘ala hawli al-muttala‘, wa wassi‘ ‘alayya al-madja‘, wa urzuqni khayra ma qabl al-mawt, wa urzuqni khayra ma ba‘d al-mawt "O’ Allah (swt), help me with the terror of the Rising (on the Day of Judgment), make my resting place spacious, grant me the best of what comes before death, and grant me the best of what comes after death."

O Aba Abdillah – I want to ask you something about which I have knowledge but would like you to confirm it, inform me about your paternal uncle – Muhammad b. Ali – did he die? He (al-Sadiq) said: I said: my father (al-Baqir) informed me that he was in one of his farm lands when they came to him and said: go to your paternal uncle, he (al-Baqir) said: so I came to him, and he was overcome by unconsciousness, then he regained his senses, he (Ibn al-Hanafiyya) said to me: return to your property, he (al-Baqir) said: I refused, but he said: you must return, so I left, I had not reached the property when they came to me again and said: go to him, I came to him and found that his tongue had been seized (he could not talk anymore), he called for a tray and began writing his will. I did not leave until I had closed his eyes, washed him, enshrouded him, prayed over him, and buried him, so if this is death – then he has – by Allah – died! He (al-Sadiq) said: so he (Hayyan) said to me: may Allah have mercy on you, it was made to appear so to your father, I said: glory be to Allah! you turn away from your own heart! he said to me: and what is turning away from the heart? I said: lying (to it).

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a people who drown with a ship or a house falls on them and they die; and it is not known who has died first. He (the Imam) said, ‘They inherit each other and that is how it is in the book of Ali (a.s.).”’ Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al- Hajjaj a similar Hadith except that he has said, ‘This is how we found in the book of Ali (a.s.).’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah or abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, likes a servant whose son dies but he praises Allah. Allah says, “My angels, look to My servant. I took away his soul but he praises and thanks Me.’””

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about a people on whom a house falls and they all die. It is not known who has died first. He (the Imam) said, ‘They all inherit each other.’ I then said, ‘Abu Hanifah has introduced something in it.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What has he introduced?’ I said, ‘Two men who were brothers, one of them was my Mawla’ (slave) and the other was a Mawla’ of another man. One of them had one hundred thousand dirham and the other did not have anything. They embarked on a ship but they drowned and it is not known which one died first, the legacy belongs to the heirs of the one who had nothing and the heirs of the one who had the asset does not receive anything.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘He (abu Hanifah) has heard it (the answer) and that is the way it is.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man and a woman on whom a wall falls and they die. He (the Imam) said, ‘The man inherits from the woman and the woman inherits from the man.’ I then said that abu Hanifah has introduced something in it.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What has he introduced in it?’ I said that in the case of two non- Arab men who were brothers and had no heirs except their Mawla’ (Master) of whom one had one hundred thousand dirham, which was well known, and the other did not have anything. They embarked on a ship and they were drowned. The one hundred thousand dirham was taken out for distribution. He said that it all must be given to the Mawali of the one who had nothing. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not deny what he has introduced; it is true and that is how it is.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘The asset must be given to the Mawali of the one who did not anything . The other brother did not have anything so that the Mawali of the other could inherit anything.’”

I asked Imam (as) about a house that collapsed on a group of people gathered together, and it was not known who among them died first. Imam (as) said: "They inherit from one another." I said: "Abu Hanifah has given a different ruling regarding this." Imam (as) asked: "And what did he say?" I replied: "He said that if two men were on a ship, one of whom had one hundred thousand (in wealth) and the other had nothing, and the ship sank, and it was not known which of them died first, the inheritance would go to the heirs of the one who had nothing, and the heirs of the wealthy one would receive nothing." Abu Abdullah (as) said: "Indeed, he has heard it, and it is exactly as it should be."

I asked Abu Abdullah (as) about a group of people who drown in a ship or a house collapses on them, causing their death, and it is not known who among them died first. Imam (as) said: "They inherit from one another."
